Our standard poodle has been diagnosed with anal gland adenocarcinoma and has had surgery to remove a large mass. She also has lymph node enlargement. She came through surgery fine, eats well and has lots of energy. We tried 3 rounds of Alkeran, but a recent ultrasound showed the lymph node has increased in size and digital exam indicates it is encroaching about 1/3 into the rectum. She has no problem with bowel movements at the present time. She is about six months post diagnosis. Now the vet has suggested Palladia or Cytoxan, but favors Palladia. Of course the cost is quite different between the two. Is there a preference for either with this type of cancer? I also saw an ad for Kinavet which claims that it is a lower cost alternative to Palladia. Is this a viable substitute for this type of cancer?
Any information would be very helpful, as we want to start soon.
Jonathan

Some oncologists will give IV chemo post-op for this type of cancer (often carboplatin). This far post-op some sort of metronomic chemo is your best bet. Is your dog already on an NSAID such as meloxicam? I would combine that with Cytoxan given daily. Since I am not an oncologist I have not used Palladia but I do know that there has been some success with this drug for anal gland tumors but yes, it is expensive and has some side effects.
