Hi!

I could use some vet advice as many of the clinics near me are closed due to the snow storm.  I am shocked and dismayed that my vet, who we've trusted for nearly 10 years and a very skilled surgeon at that, gave us some poor advice, worsening our girl Squizzle's condition.  Her left hind leg was amputated due to a large aggressive cluster of tumors last Wednesday.  A fairly big seroma developed Sunday.  Since her seroma grew and ruptured on its own Tuesday night, we had used peroxide daily to clean the wound (as I was even instructed to do that to myself after a C-section complication), so I didn't think to question it until yesterday evening (Wednesday) where we noticed a foul smell coming from Squiz.  A few spots seemed to get thin and almost "wet scab" looking.  One opened completely to the size of a lima bean and drained last night, so now there is a big, gaping hole that seems fairly deepcrying.  There is also dark skin surrounding the opening/potential additional openings. I have taken a picture and submitted it to our vet who suggested repeating the surgery...which we can not in any way afford. I will post here once this comment is approved. I'll do anything I can to save Squiz.  Is there anything that can be done aside from additional surgery?  She is on antibiotics and prednisone. Is there anything holistic I can give her for pain?

Thank you so very much!

Luren, maybe you could post that picture here also...may help her assess the situation. I know you've seen the responses to your other posts, so hang in there, okay? It is good that it's drained.

I am not sure why your dog is on pred since in general it delays tissue healing.  Was she on it for a pre-existing condition?  I will see if I can find the photo elsewhere....

Not a vet - only an experienced momma.  seroma is "normal", and dark bruising also is normal.  Foul smell isn't.  My dog had a lot of seroma , and it is scary.  Some of the stitches got gooey, and one or two actually ruptured.  We cleaned the amp site twice a day,  disinfected with clorexidin and kept a bandage on and a t-shirt.  He was also on:  Tramadol for pain and a strong antibiotic for at least one week.  No prednisone.

Johnnie post-amp

Hope Squiz is feeling better.

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.
