Hello,

I thought I would ask what the different causes are of fluid retention in paws and legs are? She has had a gradual thickening of her paws over a week or so and last night her legs got more swollen. She has a general feeling of fluid retention in her body - her ears have some and her eyes lids are droopy and runny with a little yellow discharge.

Her appetite is great. Her energy level is down quite a bit but having fluid build up is more to carry around. She seems happy and waggy. I know lung mets can cause Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy and also the liver low protein level can cause edema. Would a diuretic help?

Any thoughts and suggestions would be great!

Joanne & Ms. Puffy Pawz,

I found these search results in the Forums. I hope you find some info that's useful. I'm sure Dr. Pam will be by soon.

Our puffy paws are crossed this isn't anything serious. After all, a girl needs to keep her svelte paws lookin' good ya know? xoxo

Yo Most Fabulous Lylee and Mum,

My gramma has cancer and congestive heart failure. Because her heart doesn't work so good she gets lots of fluid retention. Thats not to say your heart is not working just fine. Just wanted to say my gramma is on diuretics all the time and they work good for her so you might want to ask your vet about that.

Glad to hear your apawtite is good and you are hoppy!

xoxoxo,

Travis Ray

Thanks for the great links Jerrysmiley I will research them in a bit.

And yes Sweet Shelby that is just what our girl did - went to the loo and had a good long wee-wee (don't let her know I said this 'cos TWP's don't like us to talk about their bathroom habits winker). But this trip to the loo was helped along with some Lasix - a "make you pee" drug that will hopefully help with the puffy pawz. We had a good chat with one of her docs and thought we would give this drug a go.

Lylee is going to have a nice visit with her home call vet and her hospice nurse, Auntie Robyn, tomorrow, to check our girl is comfortable.

We stopped by Whole Fuds again this evening and got more rare sliced beef for our princess, her dad insisted we go get some, not saying that she is daddy's girl or anything...

Hugs and treats for everypawdy

Joanne & Lylee our perfect princess

xoxo

Thanks TWD Travis Ray! Hope your gramma doesn't have to wee as much as me - we getz lots of exercise getting to the loo and back all the time big-grin

Make sure your pawrents get you some of that rare beef - you will know for certain they love you if they doz.

Sleep tight,

TWP Lylee

Sorry for the delay but I do think that the Lasix may help if it is generalized edema.  The dogs I have seen with HPO often have hot and painful joints and diuretics don't seem to work as well for them.
