Emily, my five year old Doberman mix, has only had one chemo treatment.  She was scheduled for one today and her white blood cell count was too low.  Is there anything I can do to help it increase?  I am afraid she will not be able to tolerate chemo.

The white count often decreases after chemo because the drugs willl affect the developing cells in the bone marrow.  There  is nothing you can do to increase the count; the body will make more white cells in a few days.  The most important white cell is the neutrophil, and the dog must have at least a 2000 neutrophil count to have chemo.  Some drugs like doxorubricin (Adriamycin) are more immunosuppressive than others.  Carboplatin seems to be tolerated the best by most dogs.

You can keep your dog's immune system healthy by using K9 Immunity or other mushroom blend.  Fish oil and a good diet are also important.
