Help! Our dog Arrow had her hind leg amputated this past August. She has adjusted remarkably well and we are very proud of her. Our only issue is that recently she has had, what I call "poop nuggets" suddenly fall out of her behind.
I read that sometimes tripods don't completely evacuate their colon due to the difficulty of straining and putting pressure on the one leg, so any "bits" that are left in the colon can suddenly come out while they are sleeping or upon standing.
It is really problematic actually as they can be hard to see and it really is a situation of a molehill becoming a mountain of a problem. She is 12 but has solid poops regularly and no incontinence issues- it is just this "extra chunk issue" that I don't know what to do about.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so- any suggestions? Help!
Hi Kris and welcome. Your post has been approved and our Volunteer Vet will see this and respond soon.
Glad to hear that overall uoir pup is doing well👍
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
So is this loose stool or formed stool? You can try extra fiber such as pumpkin or Metamucil. My dog only had this issue for a week or two after amputation but she had lost her front leg.
Often dropping stool is an issue with the spinal cord and the sphincter muscle but you say she is not incontinent; is she on any medication? Changing up her diet can also help if the stool is too firm.
