Porthos, our 7 year old Pyrenean Mastiff with Osteocarma is now 4 months post amputation and was doing wonderfully, running, barking, wagging his tail!
He is a front right amp, I noticed 5 days ago that he has developed a sore on his back left knee, it looks like a hot spot, he has been licking it but he is not limping on it.
I have been treating it with a cortisone spray and was going to give it another few days before taking him to our vet to get it xrayed (getting him to our vet is quite a production as its off road some of the way and I worry about him hurting himself in the back of our jeep)
My question is, how does a secondary tumor present itself? could it initially look like a hot spot? he is still hopping around fine at this point.

We didn't have any experiences with secondary tumors, but I'm sure others will chime in. I just wanted to send my good wishes to Porthos, and hopefully this is just some random hotspot and nothing more. We're thinking of you Porthos!!

Well it's great to hear Porthos is doing so well! I can't speak for the spot on his leg, but I hope it's nothing serious. Most times people think a tumor has happened when it usually turns out to be nothing, so please try not to worry.
You might want to post a photo for our vets here, that might help with some input.

I've never seen a metastatic osteosarcoma lesion presenting as a "hot spot" so I probably wouldn't be overly worried about it. However, if it does not seem to be resolving within a week or so, it's probably best to get it checked out.
By the way, Porthos is gorgeous!
Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.
Please make sure you get him checked- our sweetpea had this happen to her neck area, and we thought it was just from being groomed and unfortunately it was her cancer. I will keep my eye out if your able to post a pic- buches of prayers and hugz coming your way, he is adorable and I have faith it will be nothing!!!!

Im so sorry Sweat Pea that you had this nasty cancer develop this way. Porthos is prone to hot spots, he had one come up on his amputation site but it just went away, this one is worrying me a bit because its on his knee. I contacted CSU (they are so wonderful!) and they said that normally he would be limping if it was cancer related.
I will try and upload a photo of it.
He has been amazingly good though, im so stunned that he is as mobile as he is, even my nieghbour thinks he has more energy and runs faster than when he had 4 legs! I think he must have been feeling rotten for a while before he even started showing signs of the cancer.
He is now-
4 months post amputation
5 months since diagnoses &
6 months since initial symptoms (limping and swelling that we thought was a sprained wrist)
I will keep you updated,

This is just so awesome to read about. Porthos, I know you had a ruff recovery and your people really wondered if they did the right thing, so it's just wonderful to read that you are loving life! You made my day.

Hi Amanda!
I have a 9 year old pitbull that had her back R leg amputated in August due to Osteosarcoma. She is doing Awesome so far!!
I noticed a "hot spot" on her left side 2 weeks ago and treated it with cortisone. It has diminished, but left a little pink scar. She has also developed a "small pea sized" bump on her left back foot which I am worried about also. It is not connected to the bone....just the skin...but it does worry me. It looks like a bug bite.
Please keep us updated on Porthos and I will keep you updated on my Grace! I plan on taking her to the vert if it seems to change or not go away.
It's a very scray thing, and I hope it is all nothing for both of our sweet poochers!! Also-did you have chemo done??

Im so glad that Grace is recovering well from the amputation!
These bumps and 'hot spots' really get us in a spin dont they.
Porthos has a hard lump on his lower right rib cage (side of his amputation) we got it xrayed and it seems ok, its not growing or seeming to bother him.
We have chosen not to do chemo as getting him to the vets is quite stressful for him, he leaps around in the back of the jeep if he sees another dog! and when he is at the vet hes not always a good boy! im worried he will injure himself just doing the trip there.
He is a big boisterous dog that hasnt been slowed down by the amputation, he has already almost pulled me over whilst taking him for a walk! As you can probably tell, I dont have much control over him!
We have him on the artemix schedule, dr dresslers cancer diet, high dose glucosamine and chondrotin, omega 3, tumeric, meloxicam, massage and of course cuddles!
He has a magnetic collar for his arthritis as well.
Im not sure which treatment is the one that is keeping him soooo energetic and happy! so im just sticking with them all at the moment.
