Hi Pam,

I was reading a post where if I understood you correctly you mentioned that a very high protein diet can cause kidney problems.  Did I understand that correctly?  Emily is on Innova Evo diet.  If she starts to have kidney problems how will I know?  Yikes!

Hi Emily

I won't respond to your specific questions since I am not a vet and can't. A very high quality dog food called Orijen (see above link) is high protein and similar to Evo. It might not be familiar to some of your because it is manufacturered up here, in Genie's region. On the Orijen website, they present evidence to argue that high protein does not cause problems for kidneys, contrary to the general view. I certainly don't have enough background or time to evaluate the evidence they provide, but think it is worth mentioning. Certainly I am concerned since Tazzie has kidney problems and I am currently giving him Orijen. (If Emily does not currently have kidney issues, this is probably not a worry for you. You would know because of changes in her bloodwork.)

TazzieDog recently posted some feedback about high protein diets and her own kidney issues here. Hope this helps.

A high protein diet won't cause kidney issues but if your dog already has kidney (or liver) problems then you really should be careful with high protein foods.  The easiest way to monitor for these problems is with blood and urine tests. I test Tazzie every 3 months because she has chronic hepatitis.  If your dog is normal now I would test every 6 months.

Thank you.  Emily does not have any kidney problems.
