Hello. new to here with a 7 yr old female Dane, Kaity, who is 22days post amputation of her front left leg for osteosarcoma. She is a participant in a virus anti-tumor trial at Auburn Vet College and will still have 6 rounds of carboplatin chemotherapy. The only medication she is currently on is Peroxicam (NSAID) that the Auburn Vet Oncologist recommended because of its research validated anti-cancer properties. Kaity doesn't seem to have any pain and is hopping around very well and is in excellent health except for the cancer (no mets to lungs).
The only challenge I am having is that she is licking the scar (all staples are out) and it is causing swelling. She has a cape collar from the vet but, it doesn't completely cover the 18" scar and the "nipple pucker" part near the bottom of her chest is still accessible. I've tried a t-shirt, one of my workout tops, and have now moved to an ace bandage. So far, as soon as she moves around, the shirts move/slide down and put pressure on the scar and I am constantly adjusting it. I am sure that many of you have had a similar issue and might have a solution - please feel free to recommend away!!!

Welcome and best wishes for Kaity's speedy recovery! Your future forum posts will not require moderation.
You will find various cone of shame alternatives in the Tripawds Gear blog , and you may need to double up like Wyatt did after a surgery he had. Some members have also reported success using bitter apple spray, once the incision is healed.

Just want to wish you and Katy the best! Sounds like you have a remarksble pup and you are definitely a good advocate for her!
Just throwing o e thing out there.....as bizarre as it may seem, there have been instances where a staple was left in! Have the vet checkher out thoroughly to ake sure!
Let js know how things go. We'd love to see pictures of your sweet Katy. Great Dane, right?

Valerie it sounds like the incision area could be itchy. Have you tried putting some aloe vera on it? Don't use anything without asking your vet first, but aloe is harmless and can really help alleviate the dry feeling.
I'm so glad to hear that Kaity is doing great! You'll have to tell us more about her in the Forums.

I did a body bandage and a tshirt for Tazzie. She had a small area of necrosis/infection that eventually resolved with Silvadene cream and bandaging. She was not licking herself, though. It just took a while to heal.
