I know jilly just had major surgery on Wednesday so it should be expected but I was wondering if buprenex makes kitties really tired? She is soooooo sleepy
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Yes, Buprenex often makes cats tired or spacey since it is a narcotic. Unfortunately there are not many meds that we can use for pain for cats here in the USA. There is a new NSAID called Onsior that can be given orally once daily but only for 3 days. Buprenex is typically given orally since it absorbs through the gingival mucosa. Gabapentin and tramadol can safely be given orally but are very unpalatable for cats. Many vets use a Fentanyl pain patch post-op for major orthopedic surgeries since those last about 5 days.
If your cat is still eating then I would continue the current dose. If she is too tired to do anything then ask your vet about decreasing the dose a little.

Thanks! She's not eating really except she's gobbling up any treats I give her. I wonder if she's figured out that ill keep giving her treats if she won't eat her food......

Another question about this. I'm just noticing now, it's about an hour to 45 minutes before her next dose she's much more interested in trying to test out her new walking skills and has even used the litter box twice. Generally just seems much happier. Should I ask the vet tmrw if I should stop the buprenex? She's supposed to take it for two more days. Just as an FYI she was on a fentanyl drip for the first 48 hours while at the hospital. Thanks!
