We just got word that my small 15 year old rat terrier has schwannoma tumor in his front right shoulder. We have been giving him plain artemisinin (50mg twice a day) for 3 weeks and haven't noticed anything. Looking to see if artemix might be a better fit. If the recommended dosage of artemix is 1-2mg per lb and my dog weights 8lbs do I use one capsule and split up the contents 14 times (140mg divided by 10)?

Michael, sorry to hear about your pup. I've never heard of a schwannoma tumor but apparently it's in the same class as a peripheral nerve sheath tumor, from what I read on Google.
I'm not a vet so I'll let our Fairy Vet Mother Dr. Pam weigh in on this with her expertise, but keep in mind that it's always best to work closely with a veterinarian when attempting to treat a condition like this, especially when it comes to a more unconventional therapies.

I have never treated a dog that small with artemix but if you go at the higher dose you could give 1/8th capsule. Usually artemisinin is better for sarcomas so you might want to consider Stasis Breaker instead (Chinese herbal). I would try to find a holistic vet in your area.

I'll see if our fairy vet mother chimes in but meanwhile, my suggestion is to find an integrative vet who can give you a precise dose based on your pup's health situation. Giving too much or too little might do more harm than good, or nothing at all.

You don't need to be a Vet to give just a GENERAL idea. I know nobody likes to answer because they don't want any trouble or to be held accountable, but still.....

I'm sorry for the frustration, but that's not it all in our universe at Tripawds.
When it comes to any herbal or supplement, we have learned over the years that it's really in our pets' best interest to work with a vet who has a relationship with the animal, knows their history, and can create an accurate dose for them. Dr. Pam generously offers her insight because she knows the treatment, and we are grateful for her input when she gives it. But she is the only vet here as of today. As you can see from the first poster, their dog was 8 pounds, close in weight to yours. Extrapolate what you will from her response.
