My approximately 8 1/2 yr old dog, Willow, has finished 6 of the initial 8 doses of Adequan. After the first week or two of injections she seemed to be not quite herself. She is eating and drinking well and not having any stomach problems, but she seems quieter than normal, a little nervous and seems to be having some separation issues. After doing some research online, I found a few sites that listed depression as a side effect of Adequan. On Novartis' site I found one page that listed depression, but most of their information doesn't include depression as a side effect. Could her behavior be caused by the Adequan? If it is, do you think it is likely to get better when she goes on the monthly maintenance injection?
Hmmmm....I haven't heard of side effects but maybe Dr. Pam can shed some light on this. Keep in mind that pharma companies must list every possible thing that can happen when using a particular drug, even if the chance of something happening is one in a million. I hope it's nothing and she gets back to her normal self though.

Welcome Willow's mom,
Just so you know, your first post has to be approved but not anymore after that.
On the question, we have done Adequan without any side effects. We were told it has hardly any side effects. But that doesn't mean it doesn't. Others have used it and so maybe they'll chime in.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Used it long term (4+ years with each) on 3 dogs and a horse for with no side effects
Spirit Samson was Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and ruled as the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey stayed from Oct 2011 and left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Miss Perdy is left and has some big pawprints to fill.

I appreciate all the replies and the support. Although Willow had her front left leg amputated about 20 months ago, she's only been mine for about 4 1/2 months, so I'm sometimes not sure what might be normal behaviior for her and what is a symptom. Arrow, Willow also snapped - at my sister who lives with us and who she loves dearly. I hadn't seen even a hint of behavior like that in her before. It helps to know that someone else had the same issue.
I have not anyone tell me that their dog seemed depressed after the injections although I suppose that some dogs could resent or fear the injection itself. I always give Loki a piece of cheese or something right after his shot although if he sees the needle first he will try to hide under the table (he is not bright enough to realize that he doesn't fit under there!).
Pam

I have had my 3-1/2 year yellow lab on it for about 6 months because she is so active and we do ball play & water play for an hour or so each night
I started to notice that she (Scheyer) would limp (no pain) after a couple of days - cut down her active play - walked her more but she started acting out - she loves to play soccer with her equinine (horse) soccer ball (highly recommend this ball to anyone with a larger dog) indestructible! So went to my vet they did the screens & we decided to be pro active - she is doing great on it & doesn't show any side effects (maybe because she is still young) she just wants to play! Good luck

I'm so sorry...
