Well today is Valentina's 5 month ampuversary!! She is still doing wonderfully well. She is strong and happy and I couldn't be happier. I do feel bad though because I just learned about Fergus the Irish Wolfhound having OS in his other leg. It's such awful news and it seems so unfair that some will be celebrating while others are preparing to say goodbye. One thing that I do know is that Valentina's time will come and no amount of time will ever be enough. I am however very grateful for the time that I have had with her. Recently I did notice what seemed to be a small swelling in her other front leg opposite the amp right in her wrist area. I asked the vet about it while I was at a visit for my cat and he said that OS almost never comes back in another bone. He said that the cancer comes back in the organs. He said it was probably my imagination. I have been keeping an eye on it and I feel kind of silly because I totally cannot remember if her leg was like that before or not and if I really am imagining it. It does not seem to hurt her at all so I am really hoping that it is nothing. I did wonder if the joint in the front supporting leg could become enlarged or change shape from all the stress put upon it. Now after hearing about Fergus I am a little more worried. Today while celebrating Valentina's 5 month accomplishment I will also have Fergus in my thoughts and I will celebrate the life he has had with his family. And I know that without a doubt that all of you on this site will be here for me when I have to walk that same unwanted path.

Hooray for Valentina's 5 months! I still remember so well what a rough start you guys had with all this, so I'm very happy for you making it this far.

I know what you mean though - I posted good news today too about Abby. I thought for sure when I saw that swelling in her leg that it was bad news. But her onc. said the same thing - that it's rare to spread to the other bone. It doesn't FEEL like it's rare when dogs we've come to know and care about like Fergus and PG3 and their families have to suffer through that. This disease is so random and unfair and it's just awful. And, yes, we'll all be at this point in the journey some day. All we can do is love our pups up while they with us, and try to help each other through it when they aren't.

So love your pup up and give her EXTRA lovings from us and we'll be here to celebrate with everyone when they are celebratinng and to help people when they are hurting.

Big hugs to you guys,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

This is an ampuversary worth celebrating. I was so afraid for Valentina with all the complications from surgery. Celebrating your ampuversary during this Thanksgiving week is so appropriate.

Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul.  Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

Way to go Valentina!!!superstar I'm so happy to hear the good news! Eight months is awesome! Ranger and the Monkeysister will get special treats in your honor.

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

I'm glad that Valentina is doing well.  Keep an eye on her wrist area because this is a place where OSA can develop.  Most of the time the cancer does metastasize to either the lungs or to another bone (sometimes even the spine).  It rarely can come back in soft tissues like muscles or internal organs.

If she isn't limping she is probably fine!  Have a great Thanksgiving.

Pam

Happy Ampuversary, Valentina! I remember reading about your post-surgery complications...it was such a scary time for your family. I'm very glad to see you celebrate each and every ampuversary! Congratulations!
