More great insight by the fabulous oncologist, Dr. Joanne Intile:

The Cancer Side Effect No One Wants to Talk About

There’s one side effect from chemotherapy that both veterinary and human oncologists remain persistently unable to adequately control. No matter how much effort we put in to preventing it, we are at the mercy of this most disturbing of adverse treatment-related injury. The concern we are speaking of is called financial toxicity.

Financial toxicity, a term first coined by researchers in a study published in The Oncologist in 2013, describes how the “out-of-pocket expenses” of cancer treatment further drain the already stretched emotional and personal reserves of cancer patients, ultimately causing a significant decline in their overall quality of life and, in its most severe form, becoming an actual, palpable adverse side-event of treatment, leading to cessation of treatment.

Wow, thanks for posting! This Dr hits this one square on as I would guess most tripawd pawrents can certainly relate to this effect.  Honestly, if I added up all Tahoe's vet bills from initial tests and consults through to his end of life, I would be shocked. The financial stress is hard on individuals trying to do their best for their pets, while families are often compromising on other neeccesities to care the best they can for their fur buddies.

I have spoken with a select number of tripawd community members about this situation and we have briefly brainstormed ideas as to how the triapwd community could posibly assist other tripawds community members. This is by no means suggesting that Jim and Rene take this on. There are lots of great minds in our wonderful community who maybe have ideas and thoughts as to how we can possibly support other tripawd parents in their financial and emotional struggles.

I would certainly assist where I can, as this initiative certainly is in-line with our paying it forward philosophy.

You are so welcome. Yes, we can relate to that one for sure. We didn't even go through chemo and it astounds me what the cancer journey can cost even with the most bare bones care.

We totally hear ya on the assistance ideas, that is something that would definitely be a worthwhile endeavor at some point. You are so kind to even bring this up and offer to assist while you are still coping with such fresh grief. Thank you.
