My vet posted this .. and I think it's sooooo true. I know that I always said Shelby was the "love of my life" and after she passed, I learned of "heart dogs"... but this makes perfect sense. Through every broken heart, every tear cried, every smile smiled ... Shelby was there for me. She was my reason for getting out of bed in the morning and I miss her every single day.

I do love Jasper Lily ... but I don't think she will be my soul mate in the same way - we simply do not have that kind of bond. She is perfectly content to leave and hang out under my bed by herself. She is very solitary where Shelby needed to be around me. I miss that kind of love and energy. Not to say Jasper doesn't love me because i believe that she does BUT her love is different.
I never thought my soul mate would have four (three) paws but it makes sense. And the older I get, the less inclined I am to get out and meet new people or allow anyone to enter my heart. And onward with my recovery but Shelby's passing definitely left scars on my heart ... enjoy!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
What a cool article, I'm glad some scientists studied this topic. I'd agree totally! Yes they can be soul mates with us. My niece, who is pre-vet at CSU, just adopted her first dog. Her dad told her she's spending too much time with her dog, and she told him "he's better than the dumb guys I've been going out with!" and I couldn't agree more. Dogs won't act like dumb 20-year old boys, ever! 😉
All dogs are here to teach us life lessons, but some teach more lessons of the heart than others. That's OK,, we need both heart and brains to run this world and be good humans right?!
