This is the night before our dog Logan's surgery - tomorrow he'll have a front leg removed after recently been diagnosed with osteosarcoma. I've been lurking on these forums trying to prepare myself for what's to come. I know from your experiences the next two weeks are probably going to be very difficult. I hope we're doing the right thing.
One of my worries is that Logan is not a very athletic dog, he doesn't play much, he's content to sit back and watch the other dogs run around and play at the daycare we take him to once a week for socialization. Because of this, I'm worried about his recovery. I'm not sure how I'll entice him to get up and walk and build his strength up (he's a big guy, 140 lb, 6 year old Great Pyrenees).

Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation.
It sounds like Hogan will be a perfect candidate for a long restful recovery. He should need nothing more than lots of rest and confinement for the first couple weeks. There should be no reason for him to get up except to eat, drink and do his doody. After his stitches are out, then you can focus on very short walks and strengthening exercises.

In my experience, the anticipation, the wondering if your dog can do it, is the worst part. They are really amazing in how well they adapt. I suspect that you will be pleasantly surprised with how well he does.

We have a Pyrenean Mastiff (Porthos) who will be having his front right leg amputated later this week due to OS, he is 7 years old and 110lbs.

welcome logan!! our gayle was only 70 lbs, but she was ten, and really preferred to sit by me while i knitted, she was not an active girl when she faced amputation either. we think not being 'puppy energetic' helped her heal and helped her just 'get through the recovery' without alot of challenges. logan will find his new normal, and will amaze you with his ability to adjust. paws crossed for successful surgery and speedy recovery.
we'd love to see some pictures, when you have a chance!!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Welcome Logan's family! I hope Logan's surgery goes well. He will do fantastic - it will not seem like it at first - the first 2 weeks stink - but then you'll see him turn the corner. Our Sam was a 120 pound Bernese Mountain Dog front leg amp - he amazed us! Hang in there - we'll be sending good thoughts your way! Xoxo Sue

Thanks so much everyone, I'm so glad we found all of you! Logan's surgery went well, he's at a hospital almost two hours away so we won't be visiting until we pick him up on Thursday (they don't let them leave until he can walk, which I'm a little relieved about). I'm feeling better about our decision than I was the night before the surgery. I'll post pictures as soon as I can. Thanks again for all the pawsitivity.

Great news on his surgery going well! Believe it or not, they get up fairly quickly and don't look back. Lupe was up and walking that evening and while still slow and a little unsteady she figured it out.

Good to hear the surgery went well.
My little pug Maggie was walking the day of surgery (rear amp) but she didn't come home until the day after. I did not go visit her- I thought it would be too stressful for her to see me, then have me leave her there. I'm not sure I could have handled it either!
Logan is in good hands, I know it is hard not to have him home. Rest up these next couple of days, the recovery period can be stressful.
