They have found Ibuprofen is as effective as oral morphine for kid's pain relief after orthopedic day surgery:

Ibuprofen is toxic to both cats and dogs.

So what does this have to do with our pets? What was most interesting was the children still had some pain with both pain medications so it's likely our pets would still have some pain. In the article they recommend physical and psychological strategies. These include "comfortable positioning and the use of ice as an anti-inflammatory, as well as psychological distraction, such as watching a movie on TV, playing an online game or being read to by a parent or caregiver" to further reduce the pain.

My cat Mona liked ice, being brushed and swatting at a feather. She didn't care for me reading to her but learned to turn my computer monitors off and on. Jerry recommends puzzles for dogs.

That is super interesting Kerren, thank you for sharing the findings. It's especially relevant to me right now as I'm helping to care for my mom who has some terrible chronic spinal pain. I notice that when she is distracted from thinking about it, such as when she gets a happy phone call or laughs or does her coloring book, it's like the pain disappeared completely for that short time. My challenge this week has been adding more distractions in and it's tough!

I would LOVE to see Mona turn your monitors on and off. What a riot!
