Apparently momma rabbit decided that the shrub eight feet from our front door was just the perfect place to start her family.  Problem is that we walk Zeus in the front yard (less steps than the back and a more level yard).  Any idea how long the babies will stay in this location before moving on?

A couple weeks ago I noticed something had disturbed the mulch at this shrub and once since then I saw her run from this spot when I came out with Zeus.  Fortunately he has not seen her.  Tonight I noticed her run as I took him out and then I saw a tiny perfect little baby bunny (eyes open, covered in fur, etc) tunneling back into the nest.  I'm guessing they must be at least a couple weeks old to have fur, etc?)

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

We have wild bunnies in our yard, and every spring, it's a struggle to keep our pups (before, it was Rio and Zeff, now it's just Zephyr!) from bunny murder...  We actually bought a muzzle for Zeffy because its tough going out into the bushes and not playing with these squirmy li'l buggers, cuz she want to "play" with anything that moves -- 'possum babies, birdies, mousies, baby squirrel, you name it.  Fortunately, they grow up really fast, and a couple weeks from now, you won't even notice they were there....  In the meantime....  good luck, bunnies!!!

Fortunately for us, Sammy wasn't a hunter.  We have lots of bunnies out where we live and he would occasionally try to chase them but mostly he would just bark.  I do believe baby bunnies grow fast, so if you could just keep Zeus distracted they might have a shot at growing up.

Happy Easter....

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the right front leg 8/23/10,

leg fractured 8/27/10,

leg amputated 8/30/10

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Fortunately Sam wasn't a hunter either. I was just laughing at the mention of possums.....we had one that played dead in our yard once when Sam came running...Sam thought it was the best toy ever and it took me 90 minutes to get him to put it down....it just smelled so good to him He ran around the yard at 1:00 in the morning playing keep away, tossing it in the air and jumping on it, nudging it etc... when I finally got him to drop it, the poor thing ran away....I'm guessing he rethought the whole playing dead thing.

So far Zeus is still oblivious.  I googled it last night and, apparently since they already have their fur it shouldn't be too long before they move out.  We will just have to be vigilant.  This also explains why I have seen that bunny in my flowerbed several times now - I thought she was just eating all the weeds that I haven't attended to yet....aw-shucks

MBBVP, Mom immediately thought of you upon seeing these bunnies!  She said they are spies and that they will steal my bottom lip while I sleep!!!! oh-my

Therefore, I will take Wyatt Ray Dawg up on his offer.  I've put on my game face and I'm just waiting for nightfall....

Sammy loved "talking toys" — stuffed animals that made sounds or moved. He thought they were real and carried them aound very gently. He never tore them up. If he couldn't make them talk or sing, he brought them to human members of his pack for help. Then, he would give them a lick, pick them back up and lie down for a snuggle with them. Sometimes he carried four or five of them in his mouth.

Unfortunately, to my daughter's horror, he tried that with a couple of baby bunnies and presented them to her to see why they weren't responding. She cried.

Anyway ... people have told me that moving them is not a good idea because, if we leave our scent on them, the mommy bunny will not come back.

Beth and unintentional bunny-killer Spirit Smilin' Sammy

Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.

We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
