Such a nice topic i know!!!

Grandpa Sarge has been having alot of issues with ear wax build up, I try to clean then regularly when he lets me but it seem to becoming more of an issue lately. Do anyone else have this problem, Is it a old dog thing and is there anything I can do/use to help.

Thanks Sarah

does the ear smell a little 'off'...might be ear mites causing the discharge.  we fought mites with an afghan hound years ago, and it had a waxy look.  just a thought..

Not sure if this is the same thing- Maggie was really prone to developing ear infections. Yucky smell, goopy stuff inside, then the fire red color. I cleaned her ears all the time but it still happened. I started using this perscription stuff called Conofite, I got it from the vet. It's called a lotion, but it is drops with some type of drying properties, it keep her ears dryier and cut way down on infections. I only used it once or twice a week. I use it on Tani now too.

Most often a black discharge is due to a yeast infection.  I would take him to your vet for an ear exam and cytology so they can tell you if it is an infection and to determine if it is yeast or bacteria so they can prescribe an appropriate medication.  There are many good ear cleaners on the market to break up wax but it is unusual to all of a sudden have a wax problem later in life.

Thanks guys - There no mites and definatley no infection we got the last one cleared up a few months ago. Sarge has alway had excess ear wax but has just started collecting more over last few years, I seem to be continously cleaning them for him.

I missed this "waxy buildup" topic!!

Glad to hear it wasn't an infection or mites.
