BSL (breed specific legislation) is the topic (other than tripawds) I am passionate about.  I do not believe legislating dog breeds solves any long term problem.  We should be legislating responsible ownership, but that is a whole new topic.

The article in the link is from the Tyler, Texas newspaper.  It has a poll included and I would appreciate you taking the time to let others know this isn't the appropriate action.

I voted.  At this point, the "all dogs bite people and pit bulls are being unfairly singled out" position is leading.

And I agree.  Promoting responsible pet ownership is much better than blacklisting specific breeds.

A bit of an extreme "solution" I should say regarding that unfortunate incident.  Certainly this kind of legislation wouldn't stop with pitbulls because they would probably look to ban other types of "guard dogs" like german shepherds, rottweilers etc... No, banning is not the solution.  Being an irresponsible pet owner is the problem.

So far the polls are like this:

Yes, too many incidents with pitbulls  39.7%

No, all dogs bite people from time to time and pitbulls are being singled out 57.4%

Undecided 2.9%

-Chloe's mom

P.S. I voted no smiley

thanks for sharing this link, we voted.  i think BSL is a crock as well.  there are alot of 'higher species' that are much more the problem (i.e. pathetic owners/humans) than any specific type of animal.  anytime we single out something for it's uniqueness, we belittle ourselves.  pittbulls, gays, redheads, lefthanders...we all belong.  geesh.

All dogs do bite. Too bad it's usually only the pitties that make it into the paper creating a false sense of assurance that such breed-specific legislation will actually help.

We voted all dogs bite people. That is very wrong to blame an innocent breed for bad training/up bringing. I'm with chloe's mom irresponsible pet owners is the problem not the animal.

Unfortunately, there will always be a 'target' breed - right now it is pit bulls.  Thirty years ago, when I had dobies, it was them and rottweilers, law makers didn't learn anything then and they still don't get it.

I am very cognizant of the breed.  There are the rare occasions when one should be put down. Truly human aggressive dogs are trouble waiting to happen.  I just don't happen believe many of these exist.

Admin - you are right it is ALWAYS the pittie that makes it into the paper, however we have no way of knowing how many of these are misidentified.  After all using a pit bull as a description is sure to ignite drama and passion.

EtGayle - I couldn't agree more, labeling whether it is dogs or humans is belittling.

Chloe's mom - thank you for posting the current results.  At least no is beginning to pull farther away

Where is the poll?  I can't find it to vote?

Stoooooooooooooooopid humans!   It's what is in fashion for breeding brute dogs of today.   The gangsta pitbull is what is the target, not the dog itself.  Had it not been for the likes of scum like Michael Vick, backwoods A-hole dog fighters and gang members these dogs wouldn't have a bad rap.

I know I've said it before and I'll say it again, at the turn of the 20th century, pitbulls were the #1 family dog.

They are similar in nature to chows and I've never had a viscious chow.

Evidently when the 'NO' vote so far outpaced the 'Yes' vote, they took it down.  The only three comments were positive.  I posted one, but it was never moderated and viewable.  And I was really proud of it!

Thank you all again who were able to vote.  This just makes my blood boil.  Why don't we legislate irresponsible pet owners and leave the poor defenseless animals out of the picture.

Quoted comment from the website:

So everyone that owns a dog such as this is going to be met with legal issues if they do not wish to get rid of it or put it down?

Only people that are scared of these dogs, or have something to gain from this passing are voting on this. And being scared isn't a surprise the way this dog specifically is perpetutated in the media as being so evil.

This dog was a puppy once, and it has an owner that should be responsible enough to teach it properly.

If anything, pass a law that a requirement must be met to keep these types of dogs. Cause once one dog is banned, another one is right behind it, and so on.

Pretty much sums up what we all feel...

I feel for anyone who's child has been attacked/killed by a dog. My neighbors' niece had her face bitten really badly by a Pit Bull just weeks after I got my Pit Gracie. Needless to say, they have a bad feeling about the breed. I did take Gracie down to see them the other day (for the first time since the accident) and was told that while they think Gracie is very well behaved, they would never take the chance of owning one.

Every time I hear one of these stories I have to wonder what type of environment the Pits are living in. Even the article above mentions the dog somehow got off it's chain to get to the 2 year old. ANY dog who is chained will become aggressive.

Pit Bulls thrive on human contact, and are actually one of the best family dogs around and are especially good with kids. Pits were bred to be dog aggressive NOT human aggressive.

I think any HA dog should be humanly put down. That includes all breeds. My daughter had her stomach bitten by the neighbors Golden Retriever a few years ago. It was totally unprovoked, the dog was walking down the street with it's owner and just charged my daughter in our yard. That didn't make the news, but you can bet if it was a Pit Bull it would have.

Just say no to BSL!!

I am sorry that I wasn't able to vote before they took the poll down.  We see a ton of Pitbulls at our practice and 99.9% of them are very sweet, whereas about 75% of the Chihuahuas that come in need to be muzzled.  I have only been bit twice by a dog and both were black Labs (probably my fault for just assuming that they are all nice).  We had a client whose neighbor dog escaped from his yard and attacked and almost killed his small terrier.  He called the police and the newspapers but since the neighbor dog was a Golden Retriever they weren't interested.  I'm sure if it had been a Pitt or a Rottie they would have been all over that!

Voting to ban a certain breed will not stop the problem of dog bites since there will always be irresponsible people that let their unaltered animals run loose or don't take the time to socialize their dogs.  Everyone with a large/giant dog should be aware that their dog could hurt someone and take the time to train and control them.  Of course it would be nice if all dog owners did this.

Anyway I hope that the BSL does not pass.

Pam
