Hi! I am a new tripawd mom of a 9 yr old egyptian mau who had his front leg amputated 2 wks ago due to a bad femur break possible bone tumor and or osteosarcoma. I opted to not have the biopsy done to have more time with him since he has been thru alot since his journey from Egypt when he was 8 mo old. He is learning to get around, use the stairs to the bed and litterbox. My concern is what else can I do for him we have other cats and fosters who he loved and now doesn't want to leave the bedroom. Our vet had to use some silver nitrate on some areas when he removed sutures this past Thursday and told me to use neosporin to help heal his incision. I am so distraught over this and do not know what to do next.
Hi and welcome! Your future posts wont need to wait for approval so post away!
I'm sorry about your kitty's diagnosis. What's his name? He sounds like his doing pretty well overall which is terrific! Celebrate how far he's come, you are doing everything right!
Some suggestions:
- add extra landings and perches so he isn't tempted to jump from high places
- do your floors have traction ? If not be sure to add no-slip runners so he has a good grip on surfaces
- if he is hiding from the other cats and used to get along with them, he could very well still be in pain from surgery. This would not be unusual at all. What pain medications did he come home with? If he didn't get enough then he could be having residual nerve pain. I would talk to your vet as being reclusive like you described is one of the biggest pain signals in animals. I wouldn't force an introduction until you know that you've ruled out pain.
Try to remember that you did this for him, not to him. He is on the mend and ready to live his life again. Little by little he will get there with your guidance! Do check out our book "How to Help Your Three-Legged Cat" if you haven't already, it's full of great tips for life on three legs! Also see our Trikitties articles for more insight.
Let us know what your vet says OK?
Ditto what Jerry said about your kitty may still have some residual pain and is still feeling vulnerable this hiding out in the bedroom. So double check with your Vet about maybe a low dose of pain meds might still be needed.
FWIW It seems that I've read that neosporin is not to be applied to "wounds" on cats. I'm sure his incision area is completely closed and healed, but just thought I'd throw that out there. So take what I said with a grain of salt.
Thank you for fostering kitties and for bringing this sweet boy into your home on a permanent basis. You are doing an excellent job of giving him the care that he needs. He has a lot to adjust to these past couple of weeks and I'm sure he'll soon be interacting happily with your other kitties.
Hugs
