Hi.  My cat Spree has been on .5 (x2 a day) of gabapentin for the past two months for phantom pain .  I would like to get her off of it because it is causing her to lose he balance all the time but I don’t want her to be in pain.  I read her that hypericum perforatum is a holistic alternative but don’t know how much to give my Spree.  She only weighs 7 pounds. Also, any suggestions on the best approach to wean her off of the gabapentin would be most appreciated.  Thank you.  Tina and Spree.

Not gonna be any help as fas your your questions. I definitely  would consult  with your Vet about rhe proper way to wean her off.  Guessing going with a reduced amount at first will be the start.  At that point you may find that she is less wobbly, etc and IF the phantom  pain continues,  you could keep Spree on the lower dose, still be effective, but without  the drowsy wobbles.

How is Spree doing overall?  How severe and frequent  are her episodes.  It does seem unusual  that she is still having  phantom limb pain five months out. Has the Vet eliminated  any other cause of her pain?

Others will chime in. Hang in there!

Hi Tina and Spree! I'm going to x2 what Sally suggested: work with your vet to come up with an appropriate dosage if she still needs the Gabapentin. Is she showing any pain signals ? She may not need it, but you don't want to suddenly withdraw it because doing so can cause rebound pain to occur.

Over the years we've had a few different Tripawds Nutrition blog posts about dealing with pain, you can sift through them here. But I wouldn't go that route unless you are working with a vet who is knowledgeable with this type of medicine. If you want to, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) directory has listings where you can find one.

She's such an itty bitty kitty at 7 pounds! It's great that she is so svelte, it makes such a difference in a Tripawd's mobility. Good job!

Hello!

Nice to meet you and Spree, though wish the circumstances had been better.  A bit over 4 years ago, my cat Tuxedo had his rear leg and partial pelvis amputated due to trauma.  He is 14 years old now and a total lovable brat who amazes me at what he can do despite his handicap.  Truly he inspires me on those days when my arthritis really acts up. After surgery he was on a number of medications, but never on gabapentin, so I can not offer any suggestions on the dose esp for such small cat. My Tuxedo is a big boy weighing double Spree at 14 pounds.  But way back then I did do some investigating of homeopathic treatments in case it appeared he needed anything for phantom limb pain.  And St John's Wort (hypericum perforatum) was one such med.  This website listed dosages for animals based on weight https://frankli.....d-anxiety/

You might also want to private message Purkins, a member of this community because if memory serves it was either a medication she used or was thinking about using.  I do not recall much about my conversations with her as it was many years past.

Hugs and best wishes,

-Dawna, Tuxedo, Lilly, and Angel Dazzle
