New to the forum as my big (22 pound) sweet mush ball of a guy is about to become a member of the tripod club and his human is beyond overwhelmed. I have been reading other threads of the forum and the more I read the more overwhelmed I am feeling with the enormity of what is about to happen. Just scheduled his surgery for back right leg amputation this afternoon for next Wednesday the 6th and I don't think that the tears have stopped since I left the office. I feel so bad that my happy, sweetest guy ever who seems fine right now is going to have to go through so much pain next week and there is nothing I can do about it. Any words of advice as surgery looms nearer would be so very much appreciated. Scared, overwhelmed, and sad do not do justice for what I am feeling right now.

Oh sweetie 😔 my heart feels for you ...
It is SO hard to process the thought of amputation, the anticipation of it all is overwhelming and knowing our babies will be "handicap" kills us.
But let me just tell you they do not feel "handicap" once recovery is over.
We humans, see amputation as a disability but they, bless their sweet little hearts, do not!
Your baby will bounce back (literally) and you WILL forget he ever had four legs.
It's three legs and a spare, remember?
He will be happy and pain free, that's a promise!
And although I cannot guide you specifically (as I was owned by a huge Great Dane) you are not alone, far from that!
We have tons of kitty pawrents here who will help and guide you though your journey.
Lean on us and know in your heart your baby will live his life to the full and will be able to do everything he did on four.

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
I just wanted to say, I understand what you are going through. But trust me when I say it is harder on the human than on the cat. I was feeling the same as you when I had to make the decision to have Opals leg amputated and went through a range of emotions, from guilt to sadness. 5 months on, and it is like she has had three legs forever. You will be amazed at how resilient cats are, I know I was shocked when Opal jumped up on the bed next to me the day after surgery.

Hi. How is everything going?
Rusty "The Bunnyman" adopted us in 2014. Aug/Sept 2017, back left leg amputated (HSA cancer). He remained cancer free over 900 days. Cancer returned as of emergency visit on day 931. 15 days later, he gained his wings 04/18/2020 due to congestive heart failure. He will always watch over his fellow tripawds and their hoomins with Head Scritches and Sand Paper Kisses.
