Automatic Litter Boxes for Rear Leg Amputee?

Hello all!

A few days ago I adopted a 6 month old kitten who is now 2 days post-op on a rear leg amputation. His recovery is going great and I absolutely adore him!

I work in vet med, so I feel confident on the medical side of things, but I have also never had a tripod kitty before. My previous roommate had a ScoopFree automatic litter box for their cats and I was thinking about getting the same model for my boy once he\'s all healed up. He's currently using disposable boxes that are only about an inch or so tall since I was a bit worried about him being able to maneuver a standard box so soon post-op (we use them at the hospital for patients with limited mobility). Generally speaking, he's already hopping around easily and definitely doesn't seem to be having much trouble adapting to three legged life, so I feel like he probably won't have much trouble with a standard box once he's healed up.

I was wondering if anyone has tried an automatic box like the ScoopFree. It looks like it might have a bit of a wide lip at the entry and I'm worried it could potentially be tricky for him to navigate. It's a tempting choice because it seemed so convenient for my roommate and my little dog never tried to get into it (not sure if she would try with a traditional box), but my biggest priority is definitely my little boy's comfort. I'd love to hear if any of you have tried a box like this before with your kitties!

Thanks for your time. Hope you all are doing well!

Hi and welcome! We are so glad you asked about this box. I don't have a Trikitty but other members with cats can give you feedback if they've used it.

It does look rather high but I'm wondering if a ramp with traction would help? Like this one that Holly added for Purrkins:

We would love to hear more about you and this sweet kitty! Is his name Alix? He's a lucky kitty to find his way to you.
