We just received notice about this adorable shepherd who was saved by Andes Abandoned Animals, a Mexican rescue group. He only has stumps for front legs, but is obviously a survivor with a strong will to survive and a sweet disposition.

The website info about Sabastian is entirely in Spanish, so this is all we know ...

"Sebastian is a German Shepherd, approximately 4 years old. He was found in rural Mexico, hiding/living in a cave. The story is that he was being fed by local children. His temperament is shy and non-aggressive. For now, he is under the care of an animal hospital. So far there has not been any success in finding him a home. The current contact at Andes does not speak English, therefore I have been trying to spread the word, in the hope that someone can find a good home and help supply or create a special harness/cart for Sebastian."

If anyone can help us translate – at least the location where Sebastian is and contact info, or how he might be helped – please chime in here or contact the shelter directly.

Get out the tissues ... this video shows the love Sebastian so desperately needs:

This is the main website...shoot I need to post in your technical forum because I cannot get hyperlinks to work here! There is contact info - phone number and email - on both sites. There's also a PayPal button on the main site.

http://www.ande...../index.htm

I sent them an email...I'm assuming someone there can read English. If not, I can get help from my brother, who used to live in Mexico and speaks fluent Spanish. I'll also post his story to my high traffic dog yahoogroup.

I apologise for writing this in English, I don't speak Spanish. I hope someone there can read this.
Sebastian's story was posted in the forums on this website and there are people who would like to help. Can you tell us what we can do for Sebastian?
Thank you! He is a beautiful dog.

That fur baby needs a front wheel cart! Sometimes they will donate one ... I don't speak Spanish either. I have seen on handicapped pets website how they can offer one. This fur baby would really benefit  and have a higher chance of finding a home. Maybe a Shepard rescue could get him to the US. I don't have contacts like this but if anyone does this fur baby really deserves a chance.

Carina, don't forget, when you are going to paste from Word or an email, be sure to click the button above with a "T" (for text) or a "W" (for Word). You can enter your copied text in the pop-up box and it'll appear in the forums already formatted.

And thank you so so much for your very kind and thoughful donation!

OK, I just tried to post a long message here and I have no idea what happened to it! GRRRR.  I am new to this sort of thing....so  will try again.

Anyway, I asked a friend who speaks Spanish to call and find out where Sebastian is. What a survival story. All this boy needs is a ruffwear harness and a loving home. He has appendages so a prosthetic might work well for him. I dont know if they make front end carts but I bet they do.

Who's up for road trip? I am more than halfway serious.

I will ask GSRNC to help bring him here--I doubt they will--they have not responded to stories like this in the past but it is worth a try. I shall pitch it as a media and money making opportunity for the group. Maybe that will pique their interest.

Please continue to post here if you hear any news, as will I. Jim and Rene--would you consider posting Sebastians story up front?

thanks,

Hey I'm so sorry that the post disappeared! Remember to copy before you hit "post reply." That way at least if your browser stalls out, you'll have your text on the clipboard and you can re-paste it.

Front end carts definitely exist, I've seen them.

Thanks for working so hard to find out more details. Yes of course we will post his story on the blog, and also tell our friends at GimpyDogs.com about him. Once we know his location we'll do a post.

And we are really close to Mexico right now, just got into West Texas...hmmmmm....if I can talk my driver into a longer road trip.....

We will find Sebastian a home!

I've done quite a few road trips down into Mexico...wish I could drop everything and take off again! My little red truck has done about 8,000 miles in Mexico. I have a softy spot for the country and think about retiring there (if I can ever afford to retire.)

Thanks Codie Rae...I thought about asking my brother to call...I haven't received a reply to my email, yet. I did post it on my yahoogroup with permission to cross post and I know at least one other person made a donation. I figure small donations will go further there than in the US.

This is the reply I just go from Patricia with Andes.org.

Thank you much for supporting our cause, I hope I can make myself understand due to language problem.

We are a small association with limited money resources, dedicated to rescue mistreated dogs. Unfortunately Mexico is a country without the right law to protect animals; there is much cruelty towards them due to lack of understanding and education. Animals in general are being tortured terribly daily.

Here is our page: http://www.andes.org.mx (only in spanish) If you make a clic on the dog´s face and then on PATROCINA UN PERRO ENFERMO (sponsor a sick dog) or PATROCINA A UN PERRO A DISTANCIA (sponsor a dog from far away)

Here, you will see the pictures; before and after; how they were rescued and when they are safe and in health.

In this country is almost IMPOSSIBLE that someone would adopt a disabled or an elder dog.

This association is focused toward dogs in this kind of situation. Old dogs are thrown out of the household because they are good for nothing.

In our page there is a place that reads: ADOPCIONES CON AMOR (adoptions with love) There you will find the dogs that fortunately found a responsible family that adopted them.

SEBASTIAN is being kept in a veterinarian because we have not found a responsible adoption, dog is very much afraid because he lived in isolation away from people, he lived in a huge piece of land with several caves. We walked for more than an hour before finding him. Fortunately some youngsters told us about this situation, occasionally they would feed him with food that was found in the trash. For SEBASTIAN everything is new, we are working a lot to make him confident on people again.

I cannot bring him to my apartment because I have 7 female dogs also rescued from street.

In our association we have cemented floor which would be very hurting for his elbows; would be great to have him living in a garden or a ceramic floor.

Thank you much in advance if there could be some help for this poor doggie.

My association is called: ANDES, ANIMALES DESAMPARADOS, A.C.

Thank you also for the donation, it is much appreciated.

Best wishes always.

Hey Carina,

Just read your post. A friend of mine emailed them in Spanish today (she tried to call and couldn't get through) and said that I was interested and worked with a rescue group. She also asked where they are located. There is a town outside of Mexico City called Andes--maybe thats where they are. Hopefully they will respond to her email.

I have also put the thought of rescuing Sebastian out to the "special needs committee" of my rescue group. I have not heard back from anyone but will begin to really push it if we can get a response as to where the group down there is and could we really come and bring him out of Mexico. I have no idea if it is even possible to bring a dog over the border. I imagine one would have to show proof of rabies vaccines at least. I will start to look into that.

I just know there is a way to make this work. I cant go to Mexico--work is overwhelming right now and my husband is having surgery next week and I will need to be here to take care of him and the pups. I can work on....

  • what would need to happen to bring him here--shots,  quarantine?, setting up a foster home
  • getting media attention
  • Helping to raise money to get him any medical attention he needs, a cart, a ruffwear harness , a prosthetic leg
  • finding him a forever home

The critical thing right now is just to find out where he is and how we can bring him to the states. Once that is accomplished I know we will be able to find him a home.

Thanks!

Martha

Absolutely! Geez you guys, we are across the Rio Grande right now in a small Texas town, at this very moment. We will be here in the area for the next couple of weeks. If we can get someone in Mexico to bring him to a border town, we will meet them there.

We just need to know where he is. I actually have a cousin in Cuernavaca, which is right outside of Mexico city. I'm thinking somehow I can get him to help, but we need to know where Sebastian is.

My Spanish speaking friend just recieved a reply about Sebastian. She said she didnt have time to read the whole thing now but would call them tomorrow and find out more. Any ideas about what we should ask besides where are they located?? All I can think is that it is critical that they know there are people out there that care and want to help.

I wonder if it would be possible to have him flown to the States? I wonder if Best Friends in Utah would take him, with the promise of a sponsorship until he finds a home. I wonder if Best Friends would take over this whole effort since they have so much experience and we don't.

Wow, so many questions.......
