Hello everyone! So as my second year of graduate school came to an end (finally because this year was intense) so came time for Chloe's annual physical. Here is the story of our adventure: Conveniently Chloe started having these swallowing/pigeon head gesture/gagging/scarfing lots of grass attacks all night long (Sunday night to Monday morning) before her annual senior wellness physical (btw I got about 3 hours of sleep that night). Her vet told me Chloe's symptoms resembled acid reflux so she prescribed Chloe some pepcid ac. The other good news (a day later after her 'stuff' was analyzed) is that she is a healthy 11 year old girl (even with lots of bumps: 2 lipomas, 2 warts, 1 skin tag, all benign!)!

Fast forward a few days. Chloe barfed about a pound of grass on the carpet in the morning, then she was panting, drinking water excessively, lethargic and a bit bloated. Called her vet and she told me to bring her in. They did x-rays to make sure there weren't any obstructions (and there weren't any, yay!). Results of the xray: Her lungs still look clear (yay!) and that everything inside still looks healthy. Only thing, she is apparently starting to get a bit of arthritis in the lower lumbar region of her spine (where she only has one back leg), but that it is barely noticeable. The really hilarious thing was that she had a lot of poop waiting to be let out ( you could see her 'fecal matter' on the x-ray). As soon as I saw it I knew what it was and it took everything I had to not laugh uncontrollably. I can now say that I have seen the before, during and after results of her food. My life is complete. After some thought I think that her stomach problems stemmed from these rabbit treats someone gave me for Chloe. Since Thursday, I have ceased treats, continued pepcid pills, and added Optagest digestive aid to her food. No more upset tummy, YAY!!! But then, the vet came to check in on Chloe and told me her fecal sample (which I had thought she implied by Chloe's 'other tests' were positive for roundworms! AHHH! Pretty sure it is from eating questionable things (like cat poo) around the yard. No more unattended wandering! The vet prescribed her some de-worm meds even though she is on Trifexis and should take care of it. At least Chloe likes the taste of the stuff. I give her another dose 2 weeks after the first. I am thinking this might have contributed to her other symptoms (like bloated stomach).

The vets called early this morning to let me know that Jack was doing great and he was ready to come home. I got there as soon as I could. I thought I was prepared for the site of my boy hoping out, but I was not ready at all to see him pulling the tech that was handling him out the door.

Jack is doing amazingly well; he hasn't missed a beat, it seems. The staff at Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital were all amazed at how this hasn't phased him. (I'm sure the painkillers are helping a lot though). I was so touched when so many of the staff, techs especially, came out to say goodbye to Jack. They've all gotten to know him so well over the course of the last year and this just showed me how much they cared...I can't have asked for a better group of people to take Jack to where he is now.

I'm so happy he's home and so happy that he seems to be doing so well. Now I just have to make sure he doesn't get it into his head he can romp with the other dogs yet. Thank you again to everyone who has offered us advice, thoughts, and prayers through this! I'll take some pictures of the incision to add to the main tripawds site. His scapula was removed with the rest of his leg and the vet used staples instead of stitches (for which I'm grateful...less time under anesthesia is always great). But here are a quick couple to share.

It was a long hard day yesterday, I didn't even go under the knife until 5 pm and my mom had to have me to the hospital by 9 am! My surgery lasted over 3 hours, my mom didn't even get an update until after 9 pm, she had to keep reminding herself that no news is good news! Finally the call came, I was still under anesthesia when the doctor called so he couldn't even tell my mom how I was doing, he could only tell her about what he was able to do for me! I know that stuff is important but my mom loves me just the way I am, so she really wanted to know that I was ok. The surgery went well, but I am not out of the woods yet, the first 24-48 hours are very critical for me. I won't be able to come home until Sunday or Monday. The doctor did an FHO on my hip and he rebuilt my knee with pins and wires, he said my biggest hurt is going to be the muscle he had to cut to get some stretch, he said I grew really fast (isn't that what puppies do?) and the muscle was starting to fuse together, so the muscle will now be able to work better with my new leg! He said that I have a really long road ahead of me, with lots and lots of physical therapy...but my mom and I are committed to doing whatever it takes. She said I was the best doggie patient she has ever had when I had my leg amputated and she thinks I will be the same now. Of course my mom called the hospital first thing this morning just to make sure I came out of anesthesia ok and I did, I was resting comfortably when she called. Thank you to everyone for all the thoughts and prayers please keep them coming because like the doctor said I have a long road ahead of me!

Today is my surgery day...I am hoping that you can all send thoughts and prayers that my surgery to have my only existing rear leg surgically repaired is a success! This was me waiting to be lifted out of the car this morning at the vet hospital. Had I known my mom was going to leave me there I might not have been so excited. But my mom tells me that today is the first day of the rest of my life. She assures me that once my healing is done that I will be as good as new and ready to go on hikes with my pawbrothers and pawsisters. Thank you everyone for your love and support.

Every Tripawd member arrives here with different experiences, opinions and beliefs, but one thing we all share in common is a profound love and appreciation for our animal companions.

When a new member arrives, it's easy to remember how we were once in their situation; frantic, scared, alone, and desperately seeking some kind of direction that will lead us to the "right" choice for our animal.

During those dark times, we just want someone to figure out our dilemma and tell us "you should do this . . . "

But ironically, perhaps the greatest lesson that we have learned since founding Tripawds in 2006 is,

There are no "right" answers!

Every situation is so unique, that we cannot legitimately say to someone:

"you should . . . amputate /not amputate / do chemo / go holistic / do nothing."

This is why a good vet will never say those words to a client. Because what is right for one person's animal is not right for another. We all come from such a variety of backgrounds that one answer, one treatment choice, one path, is not right for everyone.

The best anyone of us can do is share our experiences, answer questions as honestly as possible and support pawrents as they make choices during their Tripawd journey.

This is one of our biggest goals with Tripawds: to welcome everyone with open arms and respect their treatment choices regardless of whether or not we agree with how they proceed. New members eventually learn that the only "right" answer, is the one that works best for their pack.

Ultimately, the purpose of this pawesome community is to help Tripawds live the best life they possibly can within the parameters of their circumstances.

Thanks to everyone for making the world better for animals! And for your support, friendship and kindness to strangers across the globe. This is a really special community, don't you agree?

Tomorrow's the big day. I'm excited, nervous, and eager for it to be over. I've already decided that I won't go to visit Jack in the afternoon, even if his surgery is done and he's recovered from anesthesia in time...I don't want him to get excited to see me and then have to go back to the recovery pen to stay the night. It was hard enough for both of us the first time. But he'll be back with me on Friday, hopefully, and if not that soon, then Saturday. Friday can't come soon enough.

Here's a few pictures of my boy. Thank you all for being so supportive...I definitely would not have been able to make this decision this easily without this community.

This was his picture on Petfinder. How could anyone resist that?

That's his best friend, Abbey (my boyfriend's Dal). You can really see how crooked his leg used to be.

Rizzo checking in and I figured you all need to know more about me so I need to introduce my two monkeybutt sisters I have to live with. Sophie and Beans.

Sophie is a Miniature Schnauzer which to me is a fancy name for funny looking silver yapper. She is 14 and was here when Mom and Dad brought me home as a puppy. She used to play and romp and was loads of fun. Everything was great, she taught me how to act right and how to bark at the UPS, Mailman, Garbage man, you know, all the important things a dog should know. Most important, she was my best bud. One day, about a year before Mom had my leg donated to science, the strangest thing happened. Sophie woke up one morning and was running into walls and couldn't find her way and when we went outside she walked straight into the swimming pool. I don't know if you know this but schnauzers can't swim, they go through the motions, but they sink like rocks. I thought Mom was going to have a heart attack. Mom took her that day to UC Davis Vet School Eye clinic and they diagnosed her with SARDS. My poor sissy went blind over night. So our sisterhood changed that day and we never played the way we used to. We still snuggle though. I didn't understand what happened and I still don't. Here is a picture of Sophie, my big sister:

My other sister, Beans, is a whole different story. She is a wack-job! Mom volunteers at a Senior Citizens place and one day she came home with this crazy, freaked out, loon Jack Russell that some old lady couldn't take care of and she was going to put her to sleep. My Mom wouldn't let that happen so she brought this crazy dog home. I was hoping for just a few days but no....it was a long term forever type of thing. She was 5 months old and was nuts. She is now 6 years old and is still the same.....nuts. She never stops running, jumping, freaking-out, whatever. She is not a great relaxing roommate. I guess I love her though, she does bring a lot of zip and zest to every occasion even if you don't want any. I have tried to teach her to chill and she just doesn't get it. Mom says it has something to do with her first five months of life and what she went through at the old peoples place. Oh well. When Mom brought her home her name was Lady. Hahahaha! That name didn't fit her at all. We changed her name to Beans and that fits her perfectly. Here she is:

Well, that's all for today, gotta run and see if I can catch that bird that keeps teasing me in the back yard!

We've often wondered if it's cheaper to make our own dog food than buy a 10 pound box of Honest Kitchen dehydrated dog food. The retail price of a box of Honest Kitchen gives us heart palpitations, but we just learned why this dehydrated food is actually a better deal than making our own:

Recently, Honest Kitchen staff did the calculations for every ingredient in the formula (based on individual dehydration yields) and found that:

It takes about 41 lbs of fresh meats and vegetables to make one, 10 lb box of Force.

That would cost you about $170 if you bought it all at the store and tried to make it yourself!

Home cooking is fun, but it's messy. And, you've got to do it pretty frequently unless you have a commercial kitchen. If you don't enjoy being in the kitchen, keep in mind that one 10 pound box of Honest Kitchen dehydrated dog food makes 40 pounds of fresh food for your pup, just by adding water!

We found that a 10 pound box lasts Tripawds Spokesdawg Wyatt Ray about two whole months when given in conjunction with a grain free kibble like

Honest Kitchen is mentioned a lot here, but that's only because we still haven't found a food that matches it's convenience, value and high quality ingredients that are certifiably safe for human consumption. Plus, Honest Kitchen has never had a single recall due to contamination!

I know, I know. Been way too long since I blogged. Slap my paw now. I'm sorry but being a cute and entertaining tripod is lots of hard work and I just don't know where the time goes! There are too many toys to play with, bones to chew, squirrels to bark at, naps to take and too many opportunities to annoy Mama when she is reading. I hate when she does this! It means I am not getting attention. So I show Mama how upset I am by literally plopping my cute butt right on top of whatever she is reading so she HAS to pay attention to me, even if it is to give me an exasperated "Oh, Zippy! Can't you see I'm trying to read? " Uh, yeah. Duh! Why do you think I am planting myself right in the middle! So anyway, before you know it, months have gone by and I realize I have neglected my blogging duties.

Summer has pretty much arrived in Indiana so that means lots of opportunities for me to get outside and not only soak up the sun, but get extra stinky and dirty when I decide to role in goodness knows what, or dig like mad at a mole hole. Mama lets me dig but tells me I am silly because usually the mole is long gone but I gotta make an effort anyway to show Mama and my canine brothers how tough I am. I even bite out chunks of dirt and grass to help me dig faster. All this digging and rolling means only one thing though, I get dirty and stinky and before you know it, I am being whisked into house for what Mama calls "Spa Day." Some parts of Spa Day are actually pretty fun but some, like actually getting wet in the bathtub, I could do without.

Spa Day starts like any good Spa Day. With a manicure/pedicure, or mani-pedi as the sophisticated, hip folks call it. My nails stay pretty short and ground down because we walk a lot on the street and my hippity-hoppy gait helps keep my nails short. But sometimes they still need a going over. Mama sits down on the couch and I hop onto her lap and stick my good front paw out, something like this:

Out comes the emery board and Mama files away. I don't mind it but we have one strict rule: ABSOLUTELY NO nail polish on these toes!! File all you like but if that bottle of OPI nail polish comes anywhere near my toes, we're gonna have a problem. I get teased enough by my brothers for getting my nails filed in the first place. Jasper would have a field day and never let me live it down if I had my nails painted. I am a little bit of a dainty fella, but even I draw the line at toenail paint. That is for girls!

After the mani/pedi is over, it's time for The Bath. This is my least favorite part of Spa Day. Getting wet is not really my scene, ya know? Not cool. I don't even go off the carport if it is sprinkling. I feel and look like a drowned rat. I take every opportunity to escape the tub. If Mama turns her back for even a second, out I go, and run through the house sopping wet, looking for a place to hide. Have yet to find a place to hide where Mama can't find me so the end result is I end up back in the tub. Sigh. The shampoo part is a little better though because Mama gives me a massage at the same time so it kinda feels good. I'd never tell her that though, I like maintaining the image that I hate a bath. Good for my reputation.

Finally, the icky tub part of The Bath is over and then comes The Blow Dry. This is my most favorite thing in the world! I want to kiss whoever invented that nifty gadget called a hair dryer. Man, what an awesome piece of electronics and engineering! I don't even mind the noise of it, just love the fact that it spits out warm air on my fur. And that Mama massages me even more as she is drying me, making sure I'm good and dry. Ah, what a feeling! I would sit there all day and let her blow dry my hair if we both had the time. Remember, I'm a busy guy being cute so....

Sometimes though, Mama gets a little overzealous with the hair dryer and I end up looking like either a reject from the 80's Big Hair Days or like I just stuck my one good front paw in a light socket:

Mama says I look cute, that Big Hair used to be The Thing. Whatever! I'm scared one of these days she is going to whip out the hair gel and hairspray and really go to town. That could get ugly.

Now I am filed, fluffed, plucked, pampered and just in general, looking like one fine specimen. To top off Spa Day, I get some doggie cologne to just add to my charm. They say it attracts the ladies, but it ain't working for me! The only lady ever told me I smell good is Mama. Oh well, maybe one day my aroma and handsomeness will bring me a hot poodle or something. I can dream.

It's hard work though, being so pampered, then acting like a crazy boy because I know I am looking fine and Mama keeps fawning over me, telling me how pretty I am. Such hard work that it usually requires I take a nap, usually in my fave spot which is the sunshine spot on the Big Bed.

That's all I got for now. I know you will be waiting with breathless anticipation for my next post blasting my words of wisdom. Zippy, Out.

Jack is 6 years old. He's an anybody's-guess Mutt, with the most commonly thought breeds including Anatolian Shepherd, Boxer, Saint Bernard, and Black Mouth Cur. I'm pretty sure he's got some pitbull/bullie-breed in him, but don't tell any of landlords this ever. ;) I got him at 3-4 months old from a rescue in El Paso called 'From the Heart Rescue'. He was on petfinder.com, his wonderful little fat-face staring up at the camera, big cast on his front leg, and the horrible name of 'Ben Wiggles'. I was looking for an older dog but that was love at first sight.

The cast was to come off in our second week together. My vet and I were appalled to see that the leg had healed crookedly; the break had been right above his 'wrist' joint, causing the growth plate there to not have sealed properly, allowing the bone to continue growing in one direction. The effect pushed Jack's paw out. That was the beginning of our problems. My vet re-broke the leg, set it right, and re-cast it. It was another couple of months in a cast and Jack growing rapidly. When we pulled the cast off again, the leg was still crooked. The vet decided to try a brace, but that only lasted for about a week; Jack's leg by this point had too many sores from the casts/brace. So, we left his leg as it was, and left the sores to heal with the idea we would tackle the leg when the rest of it was better. However, tackling it never happened. Our vet, after seeing Jack doing well on his crooked leg, said that we should just leave it since he seemed to have no problem with it. The alternative was to go into major surgery, involving pins and a metal brace in which the wrist-joint would be fused for Jack's life and while that might look nicer, it would probably cause him just as many, if not more, problems than the crooked leg itself.

I've somewhat regretted letting myself go along with the vet's plans, though I don't know what would have been better.

Jack has been pretty good with the crooked leg. We used to be out for hours and hours, working sheep, or hiking, and he would have no problems. In fact, he's been just fine with the leg until a past summer. July 4th, 2010, actually. We walked downtown to watch fireworks, maybe an hour's walk from our house, something he would have normally handled no problem. He started limping on the way home and I found out he wasn't placing his foot down right for some reason, rubbing the skin around his pads raw. From there, it's just gone downhill.

This past September, 2011, we were referred to the CTVSH facility and met Dr. Bevan, a wonderful individual who I've come to realize truly does care about Jack. We went into a costly surgery that I regret so much now, involving a metal ring fixator to 'grow' the crooked bone the required 5cm to make it right. Jack's leg looked alright in it, straight, and eventually as long as the other leg. But we ran into so much bad luck that's resulted in his tendons being so tight, there is no alternative but to cut them to make the paw flex right. On top of that...Jack's bones quit closing the gap 2mm from the end. A mere 2mm...and things just finished. So. We've removed the fixator ring and have let Jack's leg along for a bit, to see if the bone would do anything. I regret this too. He doesn't let on that he has any pain as far as we can tell - he runs with the other dogs and rough-houses like normal. It's just lost time now.

Thursday this will be done with. He's going into surgery on Thursday and the leg will be gone for good. And Jack will no longer live in pain. I know, once we're past the first week, I'll be much happier, and I know Jack's life will improve so much. But I'm so scared and worried. Just have to keep telling myself things will be ok.

You know, I've got this thing about smaller dogs, especially white ones.

Those little pups, they remind me of rabbits (mmmmmm). And sometimes, I just don't know what comes over me, but I can't help myself . . .

I try to eat them.

But I dunno, something's different now. Mom sez it's 'cause I'm older. Whatev. I just don't think that going after a snack dog is a good idea. It just gets my pawrents all riled up. They get really upset when that happens.

So the other day, when this smaller dogs shows up to my crib, I thought I'd be good for Mom and Dad, so I tried to be his friend.

Well, it helped that this guy, Falcon, snarled and barked real loud and told me what's what as soon as he met me.

When he did that, I thought, hey, that little dude is pretty kewl.

Turns out Falcon is a Puerto Rico rescue dawg, and he had a hard life on the streets for a long time. He's even got himself a prong collar! Can you see it? A little dawg with a PRONG? What a badass!

So now, Falcon and I are buds. But he's moving to Washington, he was just visiting Jerry's Acres. But I hope I get to see him again. We got along real nice. Even treed a sqwirl together!

My wife and I currently face a decision that you must all be familiar with. We have 5 dogs and our oldest, but yougest in spirit is called Harley (10 years of age). 3 years ago he was diagnosed with a cavernous hemangioma on his rear left leg, we had this sugically removed and it appeared to have been successful. Just before December 2011 the lump reappeared and he underwent surgery once more, but we were told that due to its position any further surgery, if it was possible would require specialist intervention. Now 3 months later the lump has reappeared, we have consulted a specialist and had an MRI scan performed on his leg which shows the tumour entends from his ankle to his toes and is deep within the tendons. Surgical removal, is not an option and amputation has been suggested as the best chance for a complete solution as the hemangioma is generally localised. We are wondering if this really is the best path. There are no guarantees that it will not reappear elsewhere and we are worried about putting the guy through surgery for nothing. However the alternative is to wait for it to grow and potentially ulcerate. He is reluctant to put weight on it already so we are in a quandary. Any suggestions are thoughts would be gratefully received.
