| Name: Kim Davidson Bio: We rescued a tripod (missing right hind leg) in Oct 2010. His Senior ACO owner turned him in to her own shelter in Alabama. She had left him out in July/Aug 2010 on her farm and went of vacation! Her Dad was checking on him every few days and found him in the field with his leg tangled in barbed wire! The leg was so badly infected they took it at the hip. He is a beautiful, Blue Merle Australian Shepherd. He was also HW positive, so we went through the Immiticide treatment with him. Phoenix Rising Border Collie Rescue pulled him from the shelter and it was the underground dog railroad getting him out of AL since he is an unaltered male. I met a stranger at a gas station off I65 to save him! In June of 2011, he was qualified as a Delta Society Therapy Pet Partner with me. He is wonderful with the amputees and head injury folks at the hospital we visit here in Nashville. He also participates in a wonderful program for inner city school children with Lovie's Legacy called "Creature Care" which helps to familiarize children with how to take care of animals and prevent abuse. We also adopted a beautiful male rough coat Border Collie from Dickson Co. AC on Good Friday of 2011. He is missing a front left leg. We have no info or origin on him. He is a senior, most likely 7-9 years of age. So 2 of our 6 dogs (5 Border Collies, 1 Aussie) are tripods and share our small horse farm with us. Simon, the Australian Shepard, is having some issues getting up on his remaining hind leg these days. I have him on Consequin DS, but he is still struggling and it kills me to watch this. Does anyone in the tripod community have any suggestions on how to handle a failing hind leg? There does not appear to be an orthopedic veterinarian in the Nashville area and the amputation was done in 2010 when Simon was 4.5-5 years old. Please contact me if you have constructive suggestions on how to help him. |
