Hi All!

I just wanted to post now that we've gotten Jill's chemo started about her wonderful oncologists at the Animal Medical Center in NYC (http://www.amcny.org/).  It is truly an outstanding hospital.  She is being treated by Dr. Ann Hohenhaus (http://www.amcn.....dvm-dacvim) and her resident Dr. Amber Tegtmeyer (http://www.amcn.....g/node/502).  They are really phenomenal, always accesible through email.  AMC is a 24 hour animal hospital, so there is always someone there to answer questions, and I am able to drop Jill off in the morning on the day of her treatment and they email me as soon as her CBC test is done to let me know if they will be proceeding with treatment for the day and then email me as soon as it's done to let me know how it went.

All the nurses and staff are so comforting to my little kitty and I feel so confident leaving her in their care for the day.

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions at all about AMC!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Or, just outside the city, on the east side is the Veterinary Cancer Center, Norwalk, CT http://www.vcch.....pe.com/.  They recently renovated and I think boast having the largest oncology practice in the country (though, I suspect that's based on square footage).  There are 6 Dr's on staff, many are residents.  We are seeing Dr Olmstead - a resident.  She was perky, optimistic, and knew her stuff.  Although she encouraged us to seek holistic care and is very accepting of the supplements we want to use, she didn't know much about holistic options.  I guess that's OK (she's NOT a holistic vet after all!), but after reading the Dog Cancer Survival Guide , it would be nice to have someone familiar (even briefly) with holistic approaches.  Such as, she didn't see an issue with vaccinating Jackson during chemo (hmmm?).  Anyway....we're  comfortable with her knowledge of the field and treatment protocols, with the hospital, and the "system" they've worked out.  There's a person, Ryan, who is the coordinator between our regular vet and the onco practice.  He was there for Jackson's first appointment, listening to the onco and all our questions and meeting our pup.  I like that very much.  It's Ryan's job to inform Jackson's regular vet about what's going on.  That's a nice service!  Unlike rica55 above with Jill's hospital, I don't know if you can drop your buddy off at VCC; I drive Jackson down and wait the 45min until he's ready for a ride home.  I suspect they'd hold your furry friend until you're able to get him or her.  It's odd recommending a place like this - I never wanted to.  If I never knew about it, I'd be happier.  Alas, here we are.  It's clearly a well-used practice and I have no qualms about the care Jackson is getting and the access we have to an expert (in this case, b/c Dr Olmstead is a resident, MANY experts!).

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

We'll second that! But thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience, it's much appreciated.

That's AWESOME that's there's a coordinator between your vet and onco! I'm Jill's "coordinator" lol
