It sounds like your vet is great!  Is there a reason why you are holding off on the Rimadyl?  If she has a pinched nerve or an arthritis flare-up she could probably benefit from the NSAID (Tramadol only treats pain not inflammation).  If Trouble is as tough as other Pitbulls I know she will bounce back quickly.

Pam

Pam,

Holding off on the Rimadyl just long enough to see if an increased dosage of Tramadol will be enough to do the trick. The last time she was on Rimadyl, her liver enzymes spiked – not to a dangerous level, but enough to cause concern.  Dr F is concerned that any of the NSAIDS will have the same effect.  We'll get through today and if she isn't better, I'll pick the Rimadyl up on my way home.

Denise,

Thanks for the glucosamine/alfafa suggestion. I may give it a try – depending on the source of the glucosamine.  She can't do shellfish.

And Everyone….

Thanks to all of you for the good wishes, I don't panic easily, but this shook me pretty badly.  She is so alert, it is heartbreaking to see her unwilling or unable to move.

Don't listen to me, I'm not a doctor…

BUT – I'd give her one and see if there is an improvement.  If so, then you'll know it's inflammation.

I can only tell you from a personal experience…I have a herniated neck disc and when it first herniated – it pinched the left side of the nerves going to my shoulder and arm.  It made me cry like a baby because of the pain.  I had a Lortab and it didn't even touch to pain.  A neighbor gave me oxycodone and it didn't touch the pain.  4 Advils cut the pain in half.  Finally steroids took about 80% of the pain away.  My point is if it's bad disc or pinched nerve – it's horrendously painful and anti-inflammatories are about the only thing that will give relief.

My non -doctor 2 cents…

Let us know how she is tonight.

Love the new Cometdog avatar and the new city!

I understand what you are saying, and I appreciate anything anyone wants to share at this point. I'm open to all options.  I've been home about 30 minutes.  Trouble got out of bed for me (the first time she's been up since last night).  We went outside and she did a nice potty, then rested for a few minutes in the sun.  It began to rain a little so we came in .  She got off the floor to eat her dinner, then came into the bedroom with me and is resting on the floor.  Still very alert and happy to see mom.  I think she is somewhat improved, going to see what the night brings.

I'll definitely call Dr F tomorrow and talk about where we are and see if he's good with that or if we need some Rimadyl.

A little better is good.  I hope she keeps improving.

Just out of curiosity- you said it was raining, does Trouble react to weather changes?  I know a couple of my joints let me know when rain is coming.

I hope Trouble is feeling better!  We're keeping all fingers and paws crossed that tonight she'll do a little better and tomorrow will bring good news.  Sending lots of healing thoughts.

She does seem to react somewhat – not a great deal, but you can see a slight difference in how fast she moves.  She's a little more labored in some weather  conditions.  The heat seems to be really hard on her as wel..

Shanna, I sure hope Trouble is feeling better. I sent you a pm earlier and feel like an idiot now. I'm really sorry. I didn't read yourtopic until just now. Thanks for the Vet referral.

Fortis hates the heat. It's big time hard on him……He will no longer go outside in the rain either. No joke, I have to cover him not me with a golf umbrella (FYI…there really big) or he won't go out all day. He'll just hold it. big-grin

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Trouble,

Brett, Fortis' Dad

Here's a funny Trouble story to lift the spirits – pre tripawdism

Trouble would never go out in the rain AND the first 10 years of her life (pre tripawdism) was NEVER allowed out without a leash.  Bob was home with her one day, it was doing one of those all day Texas rains.  She began to get anxious needing out.  Not wanting to get wet himself, he opened the back door for her.  She stood and looked at him.  He closed the door.  She waited a few minutes and started her anxious routine again.  Same steps, he closes the door.  A few minutes later she asks to go out again.  He grabs her leash, puts it on her, opens the door, and she runs just outside the open door and pees really fast and comes back in.  Bob and dog – happy campers.

And BTW, we have one of those huge umbrellas too and use it for the dogs as much as for ourselves.

laughing At least she did that! Jerry hated going out in the rain, but he would go to do his doody and just stand there, pathetic looking, getting drenched. I used to get so upset, telling hom to go! But he would just look up at me and say with droopy eyes, "It's raining!"

Living in Eureka, this happened alot. Thanks for shaking some of those fond memories loose.

When I lived in Missouri, I had 3 dogs that loved going out in the rain and snow. I spent more time wiping off muddy paws, than I spent getting myself clean! My dog Kelly, would never go in her dog house when it rained or snowed. Once she was napping outsde her doghouse (she was still a pup) and was almost completely covered in snow before she woke up!

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us. http://ranger.t.....pawds.com/
