I think one of the most important topics we should address is how to distinguish common pain indicators from the side effects of pain medication.

Heavy panting, restlessness, lethargy, lack of appetite...are our pups in pain? Or just too doped up?

You just wish they could talk sometimes. But since they can't, we need to know some tips for telling if our dogs are under-medicated, or just feeling the side effects of drugs!

I have a few questions regarding my quadpawd, Seven. He's a 12 1/2 yr old 100 lb American Pit Bull Terrier.

How do you know if your dog is experiencing pain, or is just feeling "old and tired"?  Seven has arthritis, and is sometimes just a "little bit off" (slower, seems to get tired quicker).  Do I assume it's pain if he's eating well and otherwise seems okay?

What are good options for senior dogs who can't tolerate anti-inflammatories (specifically known bad reaction to Rimadyl) other than Tramadol and  Gabapentin?
