15 days post-op now.....

Will it ever get better?!

We found out late yesterday that Yogi’s culture test came back positive for pseudomonas and serratia.

This goes back to when he had the allergic reaction to the one suture material and was oozing goop around his incision site. They took a swab or two of the goop and sent it to a lab for culture.

This is not good as these bacteria families are very resistant to antibiotics. Tuesday we pickup a special antibiotic (ceftazadime) from a specialty veterinary pharmacy. The stuff’s not cheap (about $130) and we then take it to our veterinarian who is going to show us how to inject the antibiotic. Yes, you read that right, we have to inject this powerful antibiotic into our little puppy twice a day for 10 days!

More details will follow after we meet with our vet.

Posting here now, instead of your duplicate post in "Presentation and Diagnosis." Please continue posting here so we can more easily follow along. Thanks.

Well dang! I'm sorry but the good news is, they know exactly what it is and they've given you an excellent antibiotic (ouch though, that price!) which should knock it out pretty quick. I looked it up and there's very little chance of side effects for this one, so yay! Really, I know it's hard not to think of all this as progress, but you'd be surprised how many vets wait too long to diagnose this kind of thing and then ugh, that's when there's trouble. I'll bet in no time at all he will be over this hurdle.

Hang in there OK? Keep us posted on how it works.

Sorry to hear this but boy is your vet on top of things.  Hopefully this new antibiotic will do the trick and precious Yogi can go on to an UNEVENTFUL recovery here on.  Healing thoughts coming your way!

Really sorry to hear about the infection dx...but you caught it early and have a targeted antibiotic to use.  Having fought through a MRSA infection with our Sketch I know these nasty infections are the pits.  So glad that your vet did the culture test right away...it sounds like you have a really great vet and Yogi should start making good progress now that treatment is starting.

Well our attempt at giving Yogi his morning dose of Ceftazadime did not go well. My husband ended up poking him in each leg only to have him almost jump out of my arms each time. Jim worried the needle would break off in Yogi's leg. We chickened out and we ended up taking Yogi over to our veterinary hospital where two vet technicians gave him the shot without a problem.

We have 18 more shots to go! It’s not the 15 mile round trip to the vet hospital that’s worrying us, it’s how we are going to get this done Saturday evening & Sunday (times two) when they are closed.

Otherwise, Yogi is doing great. He is up walking around, sleeping better and we have also been able to reduce the pain meds.

The other good news --- Yogi is not actively showing any signs of infection. Our vet suggested (and we agree) to take the precautionary step of giving this very strong antibiotic. Due to the amputation, and the wide range of things that could happen should an infection get into the bone or muscle.... better to be safe than sorry.

Again, thanks to everyone for the positive comments.

I can just imagine Bill and I trying to give a shot and I bet it isn't easy! Since Yogi is a little guy, I wonder if you can do like they do w/ cats and wrap him in tightly in a blanket to give him the shot?

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

The blanket is a really good idea. We may have to try that! Yes, he is little...but he put all 23 pounds into resisting us when we were attempting to give the shot. It is amazing how strong the one hind leg is at pushing off the table!!

Ohhh that's tough! But I do like the blanket idea. You might also want to try a calming cap, it's kryptonite for our crazy Wyatt Ray . We use it all the time and can't live without it.

We are almost 4 weeks post-op (Monday, 15th will be four weeks). Yogi is doing MUCH better!  He had the last of his antibiotic injections yesterday - THANK GOODNESS those are done!!! Typical of Yogi he had to finish up his antibiotic injections with a bang...he woke up on Friday morning about 3:00 am with vomiting. He vomited five times in about two hours! That gave us some extra grief on Friday morning along with the last injection. The vet checked him out - took some X-rays and determined that he just had a ton of gas working its' way through him. There were no rocks or metal objects or anything else showing up on the X-rays - for Yogi that is good news. No more vomiting, but we are giving him Pepcid AC for a few days just to make sure his stomach calms down.

Yogi's activity level is back to puppy levels. The only difficulty we are having now is not letting him be too active, too soon.
