Hi everybody! Clyde is doing much better. He can hop without support now (although I'm right there just in case) and is pretty good at getting up on his own. He gets fatigued really easily, and sleeps most of the time - no surprise given everything he's been through, but its still tough to see him not quite himself. Still has a little head tilt, but compared to how he was, his recovery is amazing to me.

The one thing that bothers me is that I still can't really get him to eat. He'll maybe pick at crunchies - I pour a little pile by him in his pen and he'll eat one now and then. Last night I got him to eat a few chunks of wet food, but he had no real interest this morning. He needs to eat to get stronger and he just wont. I'm going to boil some chicken tonight to see if he'll eat that. Probably will call the vet tomorrow if I can't get a better response from him.

I can't wait for him to be back to his normal self. He is showing flashes of that - I went to the market yesterday and when I got him, he heard me shut my car door and did his "welcome home, mom" bark. Never been so happy to hear that.

So glad Clyde is getting better!  I make a topper for kibble for mine with either ground turkey or ground chuck......I just gently cook with a bit of water, then bake a sweet potato in the oven and mash that in with it.  The dogs drool when I'm getting it ready and I think some whole foods add a lot.  The sweet potato is also good fiber and keeps them nice and regular too.  After all that boy (and you) have been through Clyde certainly deserves a bit of spoiling.....so home cooking for Clyde and extra chocolate for you!

It doesn't surprise me at all that Cyde's appetite is off a bit.  The tummy surgery PLUS the woozy dizziness he .still feels from the other issue may make him not jave a ravenous appetite quite yet.   Wonder if supplemo with really good nutritional drinks can help while his tummy heals. Do they still make Ensure? 'Stuff like that.

Yep, just continue spoiling with any yummy food he'll eat.  Ist lickong the "remains" off your supper plare is a special treat.  Eell, at mt house it's a rebular occurrence.  And I don't jave to wash the plate!  No, not mist vecauze it's "icked clean",'vut because I eat off paper plates (recycled)  mostly!

Clyde really is a miracle dog!! Good job amazing boy.....and his hooman!

My boy is about the same. He's much better than he was on Friday, but not a huge improvement since yesterday. He can walk unassisted but is wobbly, especially when he gets up. Still has a head tilt, and does this weird thing where he stretches his neck out really far. But my biggest concern is that he is still reluctant to eat. So I called my vet, who is going to put him on a stronger dose of Cerenia, and I'll eliminate one of the meds the neuro prescribed. Hopefully this will work. I got him to eat some little tiny training treats and a little bit of boiled chicken, but that's it. Poor guy. He's making me very sad.

Rotisserie chicken, baked sweet potatoes, grilled burger, steak chopped into little pieces, eggs, cheese are some of the things that come to mind as almost irresistible.

His tummy might be tender, have they or you tried the Hills A/D prescription diet? It is canned post op food that most animals cannot ignore. Your animal hospital probably carries it, and with a prescription you can get it at many pet stores like Pet Smart if your vet is far away. If there is another animal hospital closer that carries it, a phone call from your vet will usually do the trick. You can even put it into an oral syringe and feed it to him.

Between his tummy and his dizziness he might be queasy. Have you asked them if there is a medication that he can take to help settle his stomach?

Low sodium broths like chicken might at least keep him drinking and hydrated. You may just have to hand feed him for a few days. I am sorry, I know you must be exhausted. I hope some of these ideas help.

Cerenia can cause anorexia as well. I'm not saying that is the problem with Clyde just an FYI - something to consider if raising his dosage.

I am a fan of this drug it has helped us many times so please don't take my second comment on this drug as a negative. Just an FYI here is the website, prescribing info below.

CERENIA Frequently Asked Questions

and I did a screenshot for you.

Prescribing information

We used for a kitty we had the lethargy and the anorexia each time we have used it. Why I am, mentioning it,  just a heads up.

We have used it several times to help with vomiting and it fixed the issue every time but it has side effects, we were only given for 4 days worth and are to stop giving it.

Hope something helps get Clyde eating again! Come on Clyde we know you have this buddy! Your too determined & strong willed we just need you to eat better buddy! Thanks for the update!

Wow, I never used Cerenia before, and I had no idea what it was for!  Whenever I have had dogs or cats that would not eat, I have used Mirtazapine. I do not know if that is something that can be used together but the Mirtazapine has never let me down, not even with Mitchell. Last appointment I had with him I got a refill, and if he goes more than refusing 2 meals I give him one and within an hour he would eat dirt off the floor.. just sayin'.

After Holly mentioned the medicine I looked it up and felt silly blush Just not a medicine I needed to use I guess.

Looking forward to Clyde recovering some more and getting back into his groove.

It is a drug to help prevent and control vomiting, sometimes cats or dogs won't eat because they are nauseous so it is prescribed. In our case, it was prescribed to prevent & control vomiting and as an anti-inflammatory for IBD. Also prescribed for motion sickness.

Probably used for all of the above in Clyde?

Feel better soon Clyde!

A little update - Clyde is hanging in there. He's definitely a little brighter, and I see more of his personality. He can hop in a fairly straight line with some hind leg wobbling. Head tilt better but still there. Last night he broke out of his pen so he could come sleep in my bedroom. heartIt was very sweet.

The bad news - he's still not eating. I use peanut butter for his pills because although he won't take it, I can smear it on the roof of his mouth and he gets them down while trying to swallow the peanut butter. I hit upon the idea of smearing peanut butter on his left (remaining) front leg because he licks it a lot anyway. That worked really well yesterday morning, but he was on to me by last night and just laid there with peanut butter on his leg. Eventually, he did lick it off. He also was willing to eat Pupperoni treats, so I let him have quite a few of those. Think that might have been a little too rich for him because he had very soft, runny poop this morning that got all over his rear end. Don't ask about the clean up, just suffice it to know I needed another shower whatever

The good news is that this morning, he was willing to lick peanut butter from my hands and did not hesitate to lick it off his leg. He just won't take anything else - I've tried his regular food, cat food, hot dogs, rotisserie chicken, boiled chicken, bread (he's usually a sucker for bread) and cheese - nada, he won't eat any of it. I'm going to get hamburger tonight and try that.

At least he's eating peanut butter, its high in calories and protein which should be good for him. We see the vet tomorrow - stitches are coming out and the vet will evaluate him. We may start on appetite stimulants.

Not gonna lie, I'm physically and emotionally exhausted. This has been so much worse that his amputation surgery. Last night I just started crying while begging him to eat. He just looked at me with his sad eyes, and I felt terrible. At least this morning, he looks pretty happy.

The saga continues

I'm sorry this is so tough. The best thing I can offer is when you go to the vets, ask them to try the Hills Prescription A/D. I have used it too many times to count, we used it on post surgeries like Clyde had too. You can also ask them for a big oral syringe. You can warm the A/D up a little, suck it into the syringe, and squirt small amounts at a time into the side of his mouth if he won't take it by himself. It is made for post surgical patients and debilitated patients. High in calories and nutrients and almost irrisistably yummy.

For his pills, you can (don't laugh) smear butter on them, open his mouth, get the pill as far back on his tongue as he will let you then gently close his mouth, tilt his head up  him how slightly, tell him how good he is and how much you love him while gently massaging his neck from the bottom of his chin toward his shoulder to get that swallow going. Most of the time their little tongue will stick out once they swallow so don't hold it too tight, just enough so he can't spit it out. After the first couple times you should be able to do it in one nice smooth motion.

Please let me know how you do.

Hugs,

Jackie

Have you asked your vet about giving an appetite stimulate?  Some here have used it with good results.  But at least something to ask your vet about?  It's so hard when we have to worry about them not eating....breaks our mommy hearts.  Hugs!
