Treating Osteosarcoma Lung Mets in Doberman

Our 6 yr old rottie/doberman "Onyx" was diagnosed in Dec. with osteosarcoma and a mast cell tumor on her nose.

She received 6 chemo treatments for osteosarcoma and 4 for the mast cell tumor.

She had a chest x-ray today and sadly they found cancer had spread to her lungs.

We were told we could elect to try Palladia with the hopes of slowing down the disease. We are leaning towards trying a homeopathic/holistic approach but have no idea what to try or where to find information. We know that it is only a matter of time before the cancer takes over and would like to make her remaining months comfortable and filled with lots of love and affection!!

Can anyone point me to a site or let me know what they tried and if it seems to help.

Thank you,

On The Road

Hi Onyxgirl,

I'm sorry to hear about the lung mets. Don't give up though, many Tripawds have lived far longer than the typical prognosis for osteosarcoma lung mets.

Have you seen this discussion forum topic about treating lung mets? Lots of ideas and tips here:

Metronomic Therapy for Canine Osteosarcoma Metastasis: Jerry's Experience

Apologies for the brief response, I'm out the door right now but I'll be back later. Thanks for your patience. Stay tuned, others will chime in soon.

Jerry,

Thank you for your response and the link!!

i forgot to mention that she had her front leg amputated after the initial diagnosis. In addition she had surgery shortly after that to remove the mast cell tumor and a lymph node. Then she started chemo. So we have done all we could do to keep the cancer at bay and relieve any pain.

Thanks again!!

I'm so sorry to hear about Onyx, but you are now part of a wonderful community with lots of support and information.

I'm pretty new here myself, but Zato & I have just started working with a homeopathic vet, Dr. Loops. If you're interested in homeopathy, you may want to touch base with him: http://www.char.....m.com/home.

We welcome you and wish you and Onyx the best!

Hi Onix and family,

When my Great Dane Eurydice initially developed lung mets we tried metronomic therapy (for 1 1/2 months) and doxorubicin (3 sessions out of 5)

We also tried Palladia for a short period but she developed a big urinary infection so I stopped giving it to her.

Sadly none of these drugs was able to stop the progression of the disease and we later switched to holistic treatments and many months later cortisone and diuretics.

The fact metronomics and doxorubicin did not work for my girl does not mean it won't work for Onix so please discuss these options with your oncologist.

Sending you lots of positive energy and cuddles to your boy heart

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

So very sorry to hear about Onyx.

My Otis was diagnosed days after Christmas. Amputated on 1/6.  After his 4th of 6 planned Carboplatin sessions he had some respiratory issues.

That is when we decided to go the homeopathy route as we knew we couldn't risk it again.  We went with Dr. Loops. You can search the forums here for iinformation on him.

on 6/27 X-rays showed 3 lung mets and we were prescribed Palladia.  It took me a week of battling with the chance of the side effects to decide we were going to not give it to him and use Dr. Loops. Do his methods "work"? Not a clue, however the oncologist told us that metronomics may or may not help, as well as Palladia.  I weighed the chance of side effects with the may or may not work scenario and decided no more treatments that may cause harm.

Most of Dr. Loops patients have Cancer so I thought our chances would be better than just going to a homeopathy vet elsewhere.

Give that pup a big hug and kiss from us!

Rhonda & Otis

Otis - 121 lbs pre amp - 114 lbs post amp and now 118 lb Great Dane - English Mastiff X.  Started limping on 12/24/16.  Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 12/28/16 - amputation of front left leg on 1/6/17.  Stitches out and 1st round of Chemo on 1/19/17.   2nd round of Carboplatin on 2/10/17 - 3rd round on 3/2/2017.  4th round was scheduled for 3/22/17 - however due to low WBC postponed - 4th Chemo completed on 3/28/17.  Had breathing difficulties, stayed in Tufts ICU overnight.  Due for 2 more rounds of Chemo but we are opting to go with homeopathy with Dr. Loops instead.
