Dggone it...sorry to hear that sweet Luther Bear had a rotten reaction! As you've duly noted, it does happen sometimes. And as Jerry said, we all go into the chemo tretment knowing we can stop and the side effects will clear up. Sounds like the first dose was a little too strong for him. But yeah, more prodding, needle pokes, and the risk of him being sick all over again...not good quality at all!!

And as you already know from being here, doing chemo is such a crap shoot anyway!! Some dogs get years of extended time.without ever.even going that route, and some only get a very short time with.chemo! And some have to stop after the first, second, etc. treatment for.exactly the same reasons. So you do what is best for your dog or cat based on their own personality and individuality out of love...and that is ALWAYS the right decision!

In fact, I'm pretty sure I see Luther's little stub tail and big butt just wiggling away at the thought of not having to go back to the vet!!!clap

I applaud you and your husband for staying the course on your commitment to Luther Bear's quality and well-being! clap When this clears up...and it will..you will be so delighted to be in the moment with your happy boy enjoying life to the fullest! And even though he has an upset tummy right now...it's not as bad as the awful pain he was enduring before.surgery!!! Glad he still is earing some...even if it gives.him.the poops, he still wants to eat. I think he's holding out for steak and ice cream!

Thanks so much for taking the time to update us......and we look forward t o the next one...but WITH PICTURES!!! We love seeing pictures of this gentle giant!!! And Roxy too! Let us know.how the.hydrotherapy goes! I bet.he'll love that nice soothing water!

Sending lots of.hugs to all!

Hi all,

A little update for you.  Our poor Luther Bear has had a pretty rough 24 hours and I ended up taking him to the vets last night for a check up because I'd taken his temperature and it was just over 40 degrees.  He had been fine over the weekend following a few down days last week, but yesterday he seemed to be really quiet and subdued and barely moved all day.  The vets weren't worried and said that he's showing all of the characteristic signs of secondary side effects from the chemo so they've given us a two week course of antibiotics and some tablets to help the gastro problems he continues to suffer from.  I'm hoping that when the meds start to kick in over the next 24-48 hours he'll perk up a bit.  They warned us that this 7-14 day post chemo is common for these symptoms so we just need keep him comfortable and look after him ... although not too much because we know how he likes to act the Lord and be hand fed!

If anything, this has just confirmed our decision to not put him through any more chemo.

In the meantime, here are a few pics for you.  The first is Roxy on squirrel watch.  A few seconds after I took it, she charged down the end of the garden having sited a victim!  The second is my amazing boy on Saturday when he was feeling particularly bright and perky and the last one proves that even tripods can roll in fox poo!  big-grin

I LOVE.seeing Luther Bear rolling in the Fox poo! My Happy Hannah would have preferred to eat it as a fine delicacy!!

I'm sorry Luther is not feeling well today...glad he had a perkier week end though. I'm glad the vets gave you reassurance and some good meds. He should feel better as they start to kick in. A fever can make anyone feel rotten!

And Luther is the Lord of the Manner and should be hand fed as any King should!!!

Oh Luther, you are one very, very handsome boy. I hope you are feeling better by now.

Yeah, nothing worse than chemo side effects. At lest it's only temporary and you'll be back to feeling like king of the castle in no time at all. Life will get better, I promise! But maybe not for the squirrels and the foxes...mwahwahwah!

Not much change today.  Luther didn't eat anything yesterday apart from the small pieces of chicken that I'd put his tablets in and he didn't move from his bed all day.

My husband caved in this morning and took his breakfast to him partly to see if he was genuinely off his food and partly because if Luther didn't eat and drink something today we know he'd end up at the vets on a drip, which we want to avoid.  Our amazing boy ate his chicken and rice so at least he's had something and he has moved out of his bed a few feet.

I've suggested to hubby that he gives Luther half of his dinner allowance to him at lunch time and we'll give the rest at dinner as normal because I think that little and often is better for him plus we can put water into his food so he gets his fluids.

Hopefully, once he's benefitting from food being inside him, that'll give him a bit more energy.  His temperature last night had gone down from 40.1 on Monday to 39.4 so although it was still high, it's going in the right direction.

At this point, if hand feeding is what it takes, then yes, by all means, do it! Sure sounds like it worked, I'm so happy to hear he at least ate a little something.

Energy from food is powerfull stuff, I hope today he's perkier.

Thanks for the.update! We all just love this gentle giant so much!

Yeah, whatever it takes....hand feeding, several small meals, home cooking! Your hubby's a good boy to share his dinner!!

Have you talked to the Onco. who did the chemo? Are they doing any testing for any other cause..some bacterial.or virus infection? Or they just fee l this is all chemo related?

You are seeing improvement though and that matters!!! Keeping all paws crossed and sending group hugs!!!

Love!

Well, we've had some improvement in the last 24 hours, which is great.  According to hubby, he started to move about a bit yesterday afternoon and when I got home, he was definitely brighter and he'd been outside for a wee and poo (the latter being much better than of late so the gastro tablets are obviously working).  I took his temperature and that was in the normal range and he got up for a little dinner.  He didn't want to join Roxy on a walk, but that was ok.

This morning he got up again for breakfast, although didn't eat much, but did have some and the fact he got up was good and hubby was going to give him a little food at lunchtime to work on the little and often basis.

We saw the same team as his surgeon on Monday night when I took him in and they're absolutely sure it's chemo side effects.  They spoke to one of the chemo nurses as well who felt the same.  He's been given antibiotics anyway so even if he has picked up a little infection, that will kill that.

Fingers crossed my bear continues to improve.

Wooot! Woot! I'm LOVING this latest update!

Glad that you saw the vet and they agree it's a chemo side effect. Isn't it a relief to get a professional opinion to help ease your worries? Well, it's definitely a temporary thing and it sure sounds like everything is going in the right direction. Here's to another day of a happy tummy and more and more energy as he starts feeling better.

clap

Hi tripawd friends,

I'm afraid that after the last positive post, things took a turn for the worse and our darling boy has been hospitalized since Saturday.

That morning, I coaxed him up for breakfast by playing with Roxy and the intrigue was too much for him to not come and investigate, which I was so chuffed about, but as he stood watching us I noticed his damp nose.  Thinking it was a healthy glow, I gave it a little wipe and it was in fact blood.  So off we went to the vets and blood tests later showed that all of his platelet and blood cell counts were dangerously low.  In fact, it was only on Tuesday that we realized how close we'd come to losing him.  sad

He has had blood tests daily and the good news is that his counts are slowly increasing.  As of yesterday, his white blood cells were back to normal, platelets were increasing, but still off what they should have been and he was still anemic.  The latter remains a concern as he's not had a bleed from his nose since Sunday so although we're hoping this is just a slow recovery, there is the possibility that he could be bleeding from elsewhere.  They did an ultrasound on his abdomen yesterday and that was clear.

Our consultant remains "cautiously optimistic" and we're hoping that he can come home over the weekend.  There is little else they can do for him medically as it's just time his body needs to continue to create the new cells.

Please keep your fingers, toes and paws crossed for him.  Luther has been on such a difficult journey and throughout all of this we've forgotten that it was only 12 weeks ago that he had an op on his remaining front leg for elbow dysplasia although that seems like such a long time ago now.

We just desperately want him home.  We're praying that he gets through this, but we have made the decision that IF his blood cell count drops again and he needs to be re-hospitalized, we will most likely make the heart breaking decision to just let him go.  There comes a point when you just have to stop, assess and make the decision that's best for the dog and putting him through another visit with more needles, feeling utterly rubbish and generally unhappy is not what I want for him.

Let's hope we don't reach that stage though.

Hi,
So sorry for this sudden bump in the road for sweet Luther.......I have had this same situation with my precious Polly, but hers was way before any cancer diagnosis. Do they have Luther on steroids and antibiotics right now? Do the vets have any idea what may have caused this to happen? I do know that because of the condition my Polly had, which was Immune mediated thrombocytopenia, she had to be on pred for any surgeries she had to undergo, just to make sure her platelet counts stayed up. This is a situation we had to monitor for the rest of her life but was manageable. We also quit all vaccines, except Rabies, from the time this happened to her at 3 years of age, as we believe one of her vaccines may have precipitated this scary condition for her.

Hoping they can get this under control for your Luther Bear, and get past this new bump in his journey. From what my vets told me, this condition can pop up anytime, and never have a definitive answer.....

Keeping you and Luther in my thoughts and prayers,
Bonnie & Angel Polly

I don't know if this is the same as anemia but my girl, Shelby, battled anemia through her cancer journey. We were able to do a transfusion once to get her levels up and then we maintained with an iron supplement. I also gave her liver and red meat and other iron rich foods. Shelby also had hemangiosarcoma, which is a blood based cancer so that may have been the challenge also.

The supplements and pills did help her with her anemia so maybe that is something to ask about. I can never remember which blood cells are low or affect the count but I do know that chemo destroys them too so we always had to check prior to treatment.

I think I read you since Luther didn't do well w/chemo, you aren't continuing it so hopefully he can get his blood cells back to normal levels and you can go from there.

Hoping this gets under control and Luther can come home soon!

Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Sounds like Bonnie and Alison have given you good insight based on their experiences with Polly and Shelby! Well worth investigating!

REALLY GLAD THE ULTRA S O UND CAME BACK CLEAR...AND HE IS SHOWING IMPROVEMENT!! Hang onto that and we are all sending every ounce of healing energy the Tripawd Universe can muster up!!

Would you be able to bring him home and just take him back daily for a blood test? Do you live close to a vet tech who could come to the house and take his blood? Do ask about some of the options mentioned by Alison and Bonnie....sounds like they could help. It may even be that, what they attributed to chemo, was in fact something different...looking that way, huh? Some dogs need transfusions after surgery.

Take it one day at a time...try not to worry...easier said than done! Luther is showing signs of improvement!!!

CHEERING FOR YOU LUTHER!!! HANG IN THERE SWEET BOY!!! TIME TO GET HOME AND ANNOY ROXY!!!!

Love and hugs!
