Theo Still Struggling with Urination!

Hi all,

Theo has been unable to fully relieve himself since coming out of surgery except when he's asleep at night. He just dribbles a little bit all the time, and this is coming from a dog who has never used the bathroom in the house! The vet checked for infections as well as any masses/tumors during an ultrasound. Everything has come back clean. She thinks it was something to do with his posture being a tripawd now, that he's constricting his bladder somehow.

Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm trying to think how I can help him relax outside or position him differently...

Thank you!

Also, wanted to add that he has never lifted his leg to pee!

My Leland had started forming calcium crystals in his urine which could eventually turn to stones.  The vet at the time x-rayed Leland's bladder to determine if stones had started forming...which thankfully they hadn't.  He was placed on a special dog food to help keep his urine pH in balance...way-confused

I would assume if Theo was dealing with stones it would have been picked up by an ultrasound...though I'm no vet and ours looked for them via x-ray.

From what I had read when Leland was going through this it's important if the dog is dealing with stones to get them removed.  Backing up the urine in the urine track of the body isn't good.

This is just an avenue you could check into in case you hadn't already.

Wishing you and Theo luck in getting this new twist in his journey figured out.

Well I checked, and the crystals should've shown up during his urinalysis. I'm thinking it's a posture issue, as he's been walking pretty hunch-backed since the surgery.

Also, you might post this under Ask A Vet and see if she has any insight.

Not liftingnhis leg...has that just been since the amputation? AIs he just sort of squatting or just walking around dribbling?

May need to have him checked out by a good Physical Therapist or Rehab. Specialist. One more thought, check out the site for how to massage a dog...there's a video on here. Anyway, before takingnhim out to pee, maybe you could try a really good relaxing massage and see if that helps.

I agree with Sally that a referral to a vet rehab therapist is a good idea, especially if he's hunched up a lot of the time (which could also indicate pain). Ask your vet for one.

Thanks all- Heading to his primary vet this afternoon to at least have them release his current bladder contents, since I'm starting to worry it's getting dangerously backed up. I'll let you know what they say!

Hi guys-

So they confirmed it's just due to him being uncomfortable/off-balance as tripawd. He's clenching his abdomen muscles so tight and won't let them relax to urinate. The solution? We have to manually squeeze/massage his bladder to make him go.

Sheesh- the things we do for our little tripawds!!!

On another note, Theo starts chemo today! Positive energy his way please!

That's good news!!  At least it's not something that will require another procedure.

Good luck with the chemo today and I'll definitely be keeping Theo in my thoughts!

Oh WOW!! Just wonderingnif anyone else has heard ofnthis? Sheesh is right!

What do they suggest...well..other than squeezingnhis bladder? Massage? Physical therapy?

How about muscle relaxer...or even pain meds? This isn't much help, but I know there's a. Uscle relaxer that someonenused that started with an "m"...wasnw for the same specific but just wondering if that could help.

But hes.....a big sigh of relief!!! Craaaaazy journey!!!

Would love to see more pictures of that sweet boy!!!

Sending hugs...guess it should be "squeezing" hugs!!

The doctor seemed really hesitant to add any more meds to our mix, but I am thinking about giving him a tramadol as soon as I get home from work and seeing if that helps during our evening walk! Hopefully SnaggleDad will take some pictures before chemo today as Theo is sporting his NEWWWW Tripawd Bandana! He looks so handsome with it on!

Below are some recent pictures though. First one was about 1 week post amp, and the other last weekend with his Puppy Grandma!

Good lawd that Theo is soooooo cute!!! Just ADORABLE!!!

Yeah, maybe a tramadol will kick in and give him some "relief" ...in every sense of the word!

SnaggleMom, SnaggleDad, SnaggleGrandma...you are ALL doing a great job!!! It's still so early in recovery.

Hugs to all!
