So Stewie boy went for his second round of Carboplatin chemotherapy today. I had been given some anxiety pills to give him for our  and even though he had them today, he was still shaking like a leaf during the procedure. But he was a complete gentleman while they poke and prodded. Poor lad, they could get a food vein in his front leg, so they had to go to the rear leg. Which has been no problem in the past, but today it seemed to bleed for a lot longer afterwards. I had to put a dressing back on it for a while after we got home. Could this be a result of the Carboplatin?

He was definitely exhausted by the time we got home, but I think that was the anxiety that wore him down for the most part. But that didn't stop him from enjoying his chicken strips after supper and his favourite hedgehog is always close by!big-grin

Hey Allen-Clan!

It sounds like you got to stay during the chemo session, too? I always felt like I was the only one that got to do that.

I actually prefer it A LOT if they use a vein on Manni's back leg because he's become very very sensitive (and somewhat protective) of his remaining front paw. I can totally understand that and the stress it causes him when they use the front leg is horrendous. You may also find during the next few sessions that they have more and more an issue with finding a decent vein. The chemo makes it harder on the veins and the needles can cause scar tissue. not to scare you, more to prepare.

Manni was always very anxious, too, so we understand Stewie just fine! He still handled it like a pro and having me there definitely helped. I don't know much about the bleeding, we never had that issue, sorry. Is he on any meds that may be thinning the blood as a side effect? That would be my only relevant guess.

best of luck with the next appointments!!

Hugs

Tina

PS: Manni says: Go Stewie! Way to handle the hedgehog, dude!!

Awww Stewie!   Sounds like you had a bit of an owwwie!   But the chice and Hedge Hog helped everything feel all better!! 🙂

Can't answer the bleed other than it sounds like he just needed a better little pressure wrap left on at the Vet.  Certainly check with your Vet if you see any issues.......sweilling......pain.......more bleeding, etc.

Extra hugs for Mr Smoochable!heart

Good morning Tina & Sally!

thank you so much for your words of wisdom...

Tina, your news about the veins was a little unnerving, but I'm glad you hit me with the reality, I was hoping that they would have a better time of it in the future sessions. At least I will be mentally prepared...

I am really glad that they let me back there with them, yeah, I thought I was pretty special too, but the reality is, they can do their job, while I make sure that Stewie doesn't bite Dr. Bills head off! (Stewie has a thing for Dr. Bill!) I think it helps Stewie's anxiety with me being there as well, as I'm pretty sure I keep my energy positive for him!

Stewie isn't on any meds at this time, although I'm not sure about the properties of the anxiety pill?

Can you let Manni know that Stewie is practicing his Hedgehog bullying skills. Stewie has lots of Aunties & Uncles in England and he knows all about those rascally, sweet looking brutes! He'll have the squeak pushed out of this Hedgehog in no time!

Sally, I appreciate your comments too! Stewie's needle site looks a lot more normal today... it was bugging him quite a bit last night, but it doesn't even look like a needle was there anymore.

You're absalutely correct in saying the chicken helps...! He LOVES his chicken strips! Hedgehog just gives him the look and Stewie is on him! Hedgehog is an excellent distraction!

Stewie sends an extra smoochable hug to you all and says thank you for your constant loving attentions!

Until next time...

Sloppy kisses from Stewie👅🐾
& all the very best from his adoring pack! 🐾🐾🐾❤️

Hi folks,

Stewie had his blood work done today in preparation for his Chemo next week. Stewie was so good once again. They had a really hard time again today, (just as Tina had suggested) trying to find a good vein to draw blood. First his back leg and then his front leg, but to no avail! He was such a good boy as they poked and prodded into his jugular vein, (his vein is very deep in his neck and was hard to find!) and he didn't move as they held his head high and was a perfect gentleman the whole time! (mind you, I don't think I would move an inch in his position either!) They didn't want to damage the veins in his third back leg, as that will be the only option for the Chemo next week!
They had to dig really deep into his neck, to reach his jugular. I was simply amazed at how well he behaved as they poked and prodded and poked some more...! Both of his doctors were very impressed at how well he behaved as well. He got ham for lunch!

We are not even halfway through his Chemo sessions and I am now wondering how they are going to get the Carboplatin into him, if his veins are all screwed up?! They said it is extremely difficult to get the Chemo in through his jugular vein, which I can certainly appreciate.

Oh, but on a good note... Stewie was so ready to go and chase the young bear that came into his yard this morning! He was not happy that I had to hold him back from chasing it off! (Mama bear would have been close by, as this was last years yearling bear that we had around!) Bears are a little harder to chase than Rats, but Stewie was so ready!

OUCH!!!  In tbe neck!!!  Super Stu is even MORE SUPER than ever!!!! 🙂   What a GOOD  GOOOOOOD BOY !!!! 🙂 . The Vets will figure out ways to get the next injection in.  It's hard to find a good vein becw Stu has veins made out o4d sugar and everything sweet! 🙂  And, for whatever it's worth, four roubds is what many Oncos suggest.  Since you said Stewie wasn't yet halfway through, I guess he's in line for six?

I certainly hope Stewie got lots of chicken strips, maybe even a few  cheese smothered French Fies too!  And, of course, a scoop of ice cream!

STEWIE!    NO CHASING BEARS.....ESPECIALLY YOUNGER BEARS  WHEN MOMMA IS STILL AROUND!!   No doubt Stewie has no intention of lettjng one less leg slow him down! 🙂

Love and hugs!

Sally, you will have Stewie at 200lbs or more if I keep your treat regiment up! 😂 😉

Thank you for your input. He really was SUPER STU today! It's very hard not to feel sorry for the old fella! His new shave job on his neck gives him a bit of a bad ass look though! 😎

Your probably right, as far as his vets coming up with the solution to his vein issue. Even they were feeling sorry for having to put him through what they did today! Yes, we are planning on 6 sessions... I think I will have another chat with Paul though... maybe we can compromise at 5?

Stewie went in for his 3rd Chemo session yesterday and holy cow, was he an absolute angel! I gave him his anxiey pills, as usual and we decided to give him the Chemo IV on the floor. Dr's Bill & Laurie (& Stewie & I) were praying that we could find a good vein for him. Dr. Laurie looked at the front leg and decided to try the back one again... she got it!!! Stewie just relaxed back in my arms and let them do what they needed to. (maybe just resigned to the fact that it has to be done?!)

I was pretty thrilled and happened to mention the fact that it was so easy this time... well, both Dr. Bill & DR. Laurie shooshed me at the same time and said we're not finished yet!  We all had to laugh, 'cause I've never been shooshed in stereo before! We were all thrilled at the end of it all and Stewie got liver treats! He was an Excellent boy! Not a peep out of him, until the very end when Dr. Laurie wiped the blood off his ankle! Cocky buggar!

So we still have his right back leg to use for the future... yay for Stewie's doctors! 3 down & 3 to go! Yes, we are doing the full 6 sessions. Paul thinks we should give it everything we have. We are so hoping to beat the statistics, just like Nitro and a couple of other warriors that have shown that it IS possible!

Dr. Laurie took a picture of Stewie and I yesterday at the end of our session. I will post it when it comes in.

HOOORRAAAAY! That's such terrific news. I know chemo can be SO scary, and it's nice to see that Stewie is showing you how to handle it like a champ. He's showing all of us. What a great teacher!

Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see the photo.

Thtewie!! Dude! Way to go big guy!

Good thing your feet are so big, all the more to balance on! Me mom always says the chemo-thingy with the proddin and pokin is what kept me alive for so long. No idea what she means but at least that nasty stuff didn't ever take all that long. And me mom and I always looked just like yous two: on the floor together, all poked and prodded and wrapped up.

Just keep going with the flow, dude.

Paw up

your pal Manni
