Oskar's been developing these red, scabby sores around the area where his leg was amputated. Almost like giant cold-sores. Is this irritation from the hair coming back, or something more? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm very concerned. I'm waiting for his vet to email me back, so in the meantime, what do you guys think? Is this normal? He just started chemotherapy last Tuesday. way-confused

Hi Rebecca and Oskar,

I am sorry not to be able to help but that didn't happen with Eurydice so I cannot offer any advice.

We had chemo too but again no sores during or after treatment.

Please let us know what the vet thinks.

In the meantime try to remain calm, it is probably nothing to worry about, we pawrents do tend to think the worst every time there is something unusual ...

I am guilty as charged of worrying and until now luckily nothing was too serious.

Sending you a big, big hug and cuddles to your sweetie 😘😘😘💕🐶💕

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Hmmm. It's so hard to say but try not to panic. It could be as simple as impacted hair follicles. Your vet will have a better idea.

How is he doing otherwise? Everything OK?

Thank you for the kind words, Eurydice. heart

Jerry - That's the strange part. He's been doing amazing, otherwise. I figured they were impacted hairs, too (his bandage just came off last Tuesday), but the fact that they've started weeping and scabbing is what's making me concerned. I don't think it's anything too serious. His vet thinks its just a minor skin infection. I've got an appointment scheduled for this Thursday, so we'll know for sure!

I apologize if my posts come off as alarmist at times. I've never had a dog that got cancer. Since his diagnosis, I really don't want to be caught off guard again. He's so important to me heart

Until his vet appointment, I'm just gonna prevent him from scratching it and double up on belly rubs.

It's hard to know if it's from shaving, the hair growing back or an infection type of thing going on.  Does he lick at the spots like they're bothering him?  You could give him Benadryl for the itching (1mg/lb) and I would definitely keep a t-shirt on him so that he can't lick it.  Maybe bacitracin ointment if they seem like they're open, but you don't really want him to lick that off.

I'm sorry to hear about the sores. There was a cat on the forum who had sores that were itchy and I believe it was finally determined to be a yeast infection. The cat's mama had to go to a holistic vet to get the final diagnosis and remedy.

I hope you find the answer and solution soon. Oskar is very handsome. smiley
