Rocco had his surgery today...TODAY!
I was definitely expecting at least 1 overnight but they sent him home today.
Jesus Murphy. Is this night sucking the big one!!!
I had no idea it would be this tough. Watching him cry all night is breaking my heart even more. Although I know it will all get better soon, it's still hard.
The emotions my husband and i feel right now is overwhelming to say the least.
Did we do the right thing?? Does he think we did this to him?? Does he know he will get better??
Rocco's surgery was at 10am, we brought him home at 8pm and He's been whimpering and crying since 10pm. (Its now 12am where i live)
How do we get through This as best as possible??
Okay, you are definitely in the hardest part of recocery by having Rocco home right after surgery. Vut if it wasn't a 24/7 staffed clinic, this is better than leaving him overnight unattended.
You are witnessing him getting rid of the effects of the anesthesia, plus, being full of strong pain meds.

Yes, you DO have a rough night, or two or three ahead. Don't expect any sleep tonight. And certainly don't wuestiin your decision based on these first everal really hard days and night!
Roccomis coming outmof the anesthesia and is fullmof strong hospital pain meds. Your are witnessing what mostmofnus don't have to because they usually spend the first night at the Vet.
Is Rocco on a fentanyl patch too? What pain meds did he come home with? Most come home with Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic.
My Happy Hannah whined and was restless and could not get comfortable for the first three nights! And that was AFTER spending ine night at the Vet! I only had a few hours sleep those first several nights.
Maybe you and your husband can rotate and trade off a couple of hours of sleep.
Just continue to take deep breaths and know that you are in the roughest part.....that first 24-48 hours is so hard. He may not be movile for another 24 hrs, so just take it slowly. He'll figure itnout.
Has Rocco jad any water yetmor peed? If at almpossivle, try and keep him wuite and very little movement. I know that's hard though. Just continue the deep breaths and try and put forth a strong and confident energy.

Yes, Rocco did come home with a fentynol patch, his meds are the same as before surgery; tramadol, gabapentin and metacam and they gave us the antibiotic clavaseptin to begin tomorrow.
I'm glad to hear this is normal.
We just have to keep telling each other it's all a part of the process.
I just wish there was something more I can do for him.
He hasn't eaten or drank anything yet and he has not peed either. He is not mobile at this point.
It wasn't 24/7 staffed and I'm glad he's home with us for that reason.
We are back tomorrow at 8:30am to remove his IV.
You're doing great, okay? And as hard as itnis to watch Rocco be so whacky, he's probably not feeling much pain right now, he's just dealing with a drug high that is not very enjoyable!
Certainly if you have any concerns contact yiur Vet, vut what you are describing sounds ":-) normal" for only being outnof MAJOR SURGERY for only about eight hiurs! YIKES!!! Not a fun time yet!
Oh, and if he gets really vocal in a strange way, that's probably due to the patxh. It came make them quite nuts for awhike!

Oh gosh I wish you would have come by the Tripawds Chat , I was in there all evening. Yes, same day returns are the worst but the good news is that everything you are describing is pretty typical for the scenario. It's definitely not ideal but absolutely better than him being alone in a clinic all night.
Keep in mind that the drugs make the situation even crazier. It's hard to sit by them as they are so anxious and confused, but it passes as the drugs wear out. Really!
Don't worry too much about making him get up and around. At this point, he's dancing with those crazy pink elephants! In the next 24 hours he should be able to stand up and go outside to do his business though. If he hasn't urinated in 12 hours let your vet know. Encourage lots of water intake by adding yummy flavors like Gatorade or low-sodium broths, and forget pooping for now, that usually takes a few days.

if you want, I'll be on staff tomorrow. Keep us posted and oh don't forget to celebrate that he made it through surgery. YAY!

Hi Christina, I'm so glad to hear that Rocco made it through his surgery. Bruce came home the same day as his surgery, and your night sounds an awful lot like his first night, I would agree with what Sally said, the first 24-48 hours are the hardest. Bruce was very restless and whiney, but by the third night he was sleeping better (which meant we were sleeping better as well). Hang in there, it does get better.

YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!! YOU GUYS!!!! ROCCO GOT UP THIS MORNING ....oh, sorry for caps... Rocco woke up this morning from a long night of cries and he jumped up and ran outside to pee. Like it was nothing.
No. Let me say that again... he RAN outside and PEED!!! Aaaaand he ate some cream cheese. That's all I could get him to eat for now. Still working on the water intake. But MAN!!! What an excellent morning!
*edit - he ate 2 cans of dog food when we brought him back to the vet to take the IV out.
He's also not crying anymore. Oh happy day!!!

Such a wonderful update! It's srill gonna be a bit rough, but shouldn't be as rough as last night .was!
MY Happy Hannah never missed a meal, but she just would not drink water for the first week or so of recovery. I ended up swirling ice cream in her water bowl. She woukd have a taste off of the spoon and then I would drop it into the water so she could see me and it worked like a charm!

I work from home, my husband works nights and I have a 3 year old and an even needier cat... as you can imagine, it's kinda hectic around here these days. I promise as soon as I find some time, I will post some pictures of our journey. I am even hoping to create a video.
