So I originally started out on this website as Shea's mom. Shea was diagnosed back in May with sarcoma of the front left leg and shortly after lung mets. Shea did not become a tripawd due to the lung mets and rear leg issue. We choose to do radiation and chemo. She started carboplatin. Was lethargic 2 days later for about 2 days and then immediately went back to her happy energetic self. No other side effects.  During our next onco visit we found Shea also had a small mass on her spleen. The oncologist was more convinced that her cancer is hemangiosarcoma with lung and bone mets vs the osteosarcoma we originally thought. The oncologist felt that alternating between the carboplatin and adromycin would now be her best course of treatment. Her first round of adromycin was rough. Vomiting, diarrhea, depression. We were so upset, how could we put her through this, her face was so sad. 3 days later back to herself. The next round was carboplatin and again tolerated with no adverse effects. Her 4th round was supposed to be adromycin again but the oncologist changed her course due to the positive effects the carboplatin was showing. Not only was she tolerating it better but the cancer was responding better. Her spleen mass had appeared smaller and no progression in the lungs. So here we are today still with our happy, loving princess doing as good as we could've hoped for.

But I am posting here because I am also the mom of Chase. A few weeks ago Chase began to cough. The vet said it could be allergies and post nasal drip. The cough medicine did not seem to be doing much and of course already having a dog with cancer I'm a nervous wreck. So we did a chest x Ray and was told it doesn't look like cancer and more like infectious pneumonia. But we will send for radiology to review. "Here we go again". And of course the radiologist does not think its infection but more like pulmonary nodules. So after a lung biopsy Chase was diagnosed with hystiocitic sarcoma.  We met with the oncologist and she suggested the CCNU. With as well as Shea is doing we figured we want to give Chase that same chance. We administered the first dose to Chase almost 2 weeks ago. No side effects. I don't even recall a day or 2 of lethargy. No change in appetite. No vomiting, no diarrhea. He will be getting round 2 next week.

I know every dog is different and will tolerate differently. But we have only seen positives from our chemo experiences. There is nothing I would do differently in our treatment plan for either dog.

Kris this is heartbreaking to hear how much you have been through with your babes but it's also very inspiring and gives me so much hope! Thank you for sharing, we get her first chemo dose tomorrow and I have been nervous. Reading this helped so much!

Ruby is my (almost) 8 year old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. She had her left forelimb amputated due to cancer on July 28, 2016 and we are on the road to recovery!

Oh, how great to see her moving SO well after the rough patch in the early recovery!  She clearly feels so much better after the "reset" with the debriding and restitching.

I'm sure she will do fine with the chemo!  Rock it, Ruby, you've got this!!

clap

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

She looks wonderful!  Remember, Ruby doesn't know she has cancer, let alone histiocytic.  She just knows that the painful leg is gone!   They will do a cbc tomorrow.  The ccnu is a pill & Murphy took his easily (although the 1st dose they were worried about...he was being his typical stubborn self & refused to take it from them..once they brought him out to me & jag me offer it to him, he gobbled it down lol).  They will also start her on denamarin , which is like a little treat that she will take every day during treatment, too protect her liver.

You got this!

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

Ruby looks great! Hopping along like a little trouper! Nitro's Ruffwear harness also slipped like that on him - he also lost a right front leg - maybe tighten just a little, but I think some slipping will still happen. I just used to keep sliding it over to the proper place. Good luck with chemo, it sounds scary, but we had no issues. Look at it as just another adventure on your journey. Ruby seems happy, and that's what's important.

Paula and Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

So happy to see Miss Ruby getting on life!! She's walking really well and has a nice fluid gait.

A d remember, IF Ruby does have any issues with chemo you can stop!! As you can see, there are also many dogs who have zero side effects, or very minimal.

Also remember to STAY IN THE NOW! Don't waste your todays worrying about the tomorrows!

Love!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

They tend to slide on front leg amp dogs with smooth or silky coats.  They work just fine, even a bit lopsided, so don't worry about it.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Wait til she posts the photos from physical therapy. Ruby is doing really great.  SHe has not had any side effects from Chemo number 1. They even let her do water therapy at PT.  Kacy has started her grad program and everyone seems to be finally settled into a "New Normal" for sure.  I'm one proud Gramma.

Thanks to everyone here for all the support.  It came at the right time for us and we needed it so much.  We really appreciate everyone's support and encouragement.  We realize it may rear its ugly head again, but we will just enjoy the now for now.

She really looks chipper and happy!  Can't wait to see this water baby swimming again - she is a Toller, after all!  Glad round 1 was a non event and sutures are out.
