First off, let me say that Rox is under the supervision of her veterinarian since the surgery. I have anxiety issues when it comes to my pets, so I figured with something as major as a limb amputation, I should probably allow the professionals to handle her until she was a bit more stable.

Rox, my 10 year Golden Retriever, was diagnosed with an Osteosarcoma (Upper right shoulder), on the 19th of June. Ever since we had been scrambling to gather funds and schedule with the Oncologist for what the next steps for her would be. It was hard lesson to learn that she would need the amputation, but she was in quite a bit of pain at the time. The amputation would remove her entire right front leg, including her shoulder blade. We scheduled it as soon as our vet had an opening, which was on the 10th of July. This took time mainly because our Onocologist couldn't see her for nearly a week, and then afterwards that was the earliest date for the surgery. I wish we could have done it sooner.

Now it has been 4 days since she had her surgery, and my veterinarian said things were going well. I had planned to pick her up this morning; he said she would be more than comfortable by this point. However, yesterday I received an email stating that she is having bleeding at her incision point. They attempted to remedy this with a compression bandage, however it has not been sufficient. Her bleeding continued, which he did state was not heavily bleeding, and thought it would be best to give her a transfusion. They are also scheduling / scheduled to re-open the incision point, and try to locate the bleed point, and do whatever it is they needed to do to stop the bleeding.

So she cannot come home today, or probably even tomorrow. On top of this, her veterinarian costs at this point have skyrocketed. Luckily for the time being we have enough to cover the costs, and the veterinarian did say anything past what we can cover, we can do payments. So that is nice, but it will still put us in a headache, since we were supposed to start chemo soon as well. So the costs will continue to pile up.

I guess I do have a question, for maybe those who might want to throw in their two cents. I do tend to get very emotional and a bit stressed out seeing my family in pain. However, I have not seen my baby in 4 days, and now that things are going downhill, or at least, not uphill, I'm incredibly nervous. I want to go see her, but I don't want to add to her stress. I think that they would allow me to visit with her in her kennel, just to provide her with some support. I don't know if I would be strong enough to NOT be emotional for her though. It will be difficult to see her for me, but well... I am also afraid that I may not see her again if I continue to wait for the vet.

I know that this is probably a gross overreaction, but I'm sure you guys can all relate. Anyways... I will update again soon. I hope that next time I can laugh at how silly I was being, and be able to provide pictures of my girl doing well, and on her feet again.

Welcome and I am sorry to hear about Rox. Yes, we have all been there. My girl, Shelby, was at her vet for three days post-amp since I work and  didn't want to bring her home until the weekend. Dogs do amazing and there are lots of drugs that will help them.

I can offer this bit of advice, try and be strong. I know it is SO hard when your heart is breaking and you are scared but remember, Rox doesn't know she is sick or anything. She just knows that she wants to see you happy. With Shelby, I did go visit her and it was comforting to both of us. I would cry in the car but never in front of her.

Shelby did live for about 10 months w/her cancer (she had her leg amputated after we were doing chemo - long story) but I truly believe that it was positive thinking and positive energy that surrounded my girl. She never - until the end - saw me cry or weep for her. She lived every moment to the fullest and I learned to be like her and be 'more dog'.

Keep us posted, ask us anything, we are all here for you!

Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Thank you Shelby's Mom! I really appreciate your reply, and advice. I am going to see her, and do my best to keep it composed. I just called her vet to check up on the plans they had for the day, and they said for the time being her bleeding has stopped!

She received some blood, and during so the bleeding slowed and then stopped. This led him to believe she is having a clotting problem. Of course he couldn't give me any 100% details about how this will end up, but he said it is promising to know why she was still bleeding to begin with.

I'll be going to drop by the vet shortly, and give her some love.

I surely am so sorry to read this about your sweet Rox......First, I have to say, you are definitely NOT over-reacting, and you are completely entitled to be stressed and worried about your girl. We all love our fur babies and want the absolute best for them.

I agree with Alison, I think it would help you and Rox to see each other, but you must put all your negative emotions on hold till you are not with her. Stay as upbeat and happy as you possibly can while with her. I believe seeing each other will help the healing process for sure.

One thing I am having a hard time understanding, is that the vet office sent you an email for something as important as bleeding complications......I am certainly not judging anyone or anything, but that would warrant a phone call in my opinion. I am hoping she is doing much better today.

We have all traveled this difficult journey, and there have been bumps in the road along the way for many of us as well.....Rox will get past all this, and be back to herself in no time. Plus you have many of us here to support you and her through this.

Keeping you and Rox in my thoughts, and sending happy, healing energy to you both as well.....
Bonnie & Angel Polly

P.S. Have the vets run a platelet count for Rox since she was having bleeding problems? This is the one thing I thought of.....My Polly had this problem on and off through her life.

Hi Rox and Mom- I approved your post earlier but had to run without a reply.

I will second what the others have said- always be strong and positive around Rox, you are the pack leader and need to show her that everything is alright.

I still can't stay long- but wanted to check back in, good to hear the bleeding has stopped. Could it be they missed suturing something? Or is the platelet count low? I'm sure your vet has run some blood work.  I would want to know what caused the bleeding so it can be addressed before Rox comes home.

Weighing in!  Bleeding can occur for many reasons immediately post up. As an anxiety ridden pawrent to another it is difficult to worry.  Hope the visit goes well, just look Rox in the eye and let her know you love her. Dogs like to be treated normally, not as if they have a handicap.  Not to add fuel to the fire...I agree you should have received a call ASAP!  Keep us posted.

Oh I'm so glad Karen approved your post (thank you Karen!) so you could find some comfort here as soon as possible.

You are most definitely not over-reacting, and you are very, very wise to come here and seek insight from others instead of panicking. You done good Ma!

Fantastic news the bleeding has stopped. You have an AWESOME vet there. Unfortunately there are vet who don't catch that sort of thing quickly enough but yours did. She is in great hands.

When you see her, be as strong as you can. It's so hard, but she will follow your lead so do your best.

Meanwhile, remember, chemo is optional. First things first; get rid of the pain: Check! Next, bring her home and get your pack back in order. You're almost there! Then, take a deep breath and decide what you want to do. Chemo will up the chances she has better longevity with this disease, but sadly it is no guarantee. We've seen dogs live a long time with it and without it. Nobody has a crystal ball.

If you can't afford chemo, do not beat yourself up. You are doing your absolute best and that's what matters. Your happiness is all that Rox wants right now. If doing chemo will add to your anxiety and stress load, then maybe it's not right for your pack. Something to consider, just throwing that out there.

Whatever you decide, we are here to support you, so keep us posted OK?

Thanks for all of the input guys! As an update, I didn't ask too many questions about the bleeding, as I wasn't sure what would or could cause it. We were under the impression it had stopped as of this morning, so I didn't do too much follow up. Also with the number of causes that could bring about the bleeding, I didn't want to start trying to jump to conclusions about what it could be. At this point they are addressing it, and have kept me very up to date on what her status has been.

The visit was very positive! She was very happy to see me, and in general we had a very nice time just sitting there talking. She had some smiles and wags for me, and even at one point gave me a high-five. I didn't feel bad asking, since she was moving it around quite a bit. They had her on the side on a table when I first came in, so she was laying on her side for nearly the entire visit. Around the end, we brought her onto the floor, and she felt well enough for more scratches and even a bit of rolling around. Nothing very active at all, but it was nice to see her personality shine through a bit.

I felt bad at the end, I said "Well, I need to go bye-bye", and she perked up quite a bit at the prospect! However, the vet techs were giving her a ton of attention, so she was able to not focus too much on me leaving. All in all it was a very positive visit. The bleeding has completely stopped at this point, so if it continues on this route for tomorrow, she may get to come home. I certainly don't want to rush though.

A quick note about email - my veterinarian and I have been contacting each other that way on the weekends because it has been quicker, and less invasive. He knows I check it frequently, so this really isn't a problem for me. I also get very fast responses from him on the weekends that way, since I don't have a personal phone to use to contact him. During weekdays we use the phone.

Thanks again for all of the replies! Here is a picture of us from the visit!

Yes, I agree with everyone, Rox looks great and is a very beautiful girl !! You both look so happy together !! I am glad everything went as well as you hoped it would seeing each other, and also hoping she comes home very soon. This pic reminds me of my Polly's amp.....she lost the same leg as Rox, but to a different ugly "c". Polly did very well with her amp and returned to herself almost immediately. Really hope your Rox does, as well.

I am glad you and your vet have an understanding regarding the email situation, and I was hoping it was some type of an arrangement between you both......I certainly did not want to jump to conclusions and really apologize if it sounded that way. I am just very happy Rox is doing so well at this point.

Keeping you and Rox in my continuing thoughts, and keep us all updated on her coming home party!

I'm a little late to pipe in, but just wanted to offer whatever support I can give. Rox looks so happy to see you and hopefully the visit helped ease your mind. This is such a hard time, but together you will make it through. Like Jerry said, don't worry about the chemo and maybe even look into less expensive holistic alternatives.

Hang in there. We'll be looking for updates.

I just got a chance to read through the postings and I just want to say Rox looks AWESOME!!  She's a beautiful girl and looks to be well on her way to recovering and getting back home with her mom!  I'm sure the visit did Rox a world of good because I think when they are away from mom/dad for a long period they don't understand what happened to their pack.  For Rox to see and spend time with you showed her that you're still around.

There will be ups and downs when Rox finally comes home but you and she will get through them.  Rox will just need to find her way on getting around on 3 legs and it will be upsetting for you to watch her struggle but she WILL get it...they always do.  Just don't lose faith and question what you did for Rox...because of you, fingers/paws crossed she will have many more years with you.

Sending positive thoughts to Rox and you!!!
