NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Do not give him asprin!  Call your vet and get the RX refilled!

I knew someone that did that and their dog's stomach became ulcerated (and they died).  (it was before I knew them)

I'll try to find the post from our resident vet here on why not to do it – medically.  But the answer is no.  And that goes for or Ibuprofen and Tylenol too.

Dr. Pam wrote this on another post :

Do NOT give your dog Ibuprofen unless you want a stomach ulcer.  It is not a good choice for dogs anyway, and combined with another NSAID like Rimadyl it doubles the risk for problems.  Also do not use aspirin with NSAIDS and do not use Tylenol either.

Thanks just wanted some experiences. I have heard terrible stories about Rimadyl as well as aspirin when used long term. I may just resort to Medicinal Marijuana Dog biscuits.

Samson is the arthritis king…his wrists bones are so deteriorated (he is 13+ yrs old)  that he was originally mis-diagnosed with OS. I am a big fan of Adequan injections and he is now on liquid metacam. The Metacam pills (very inexpensive) upset his stomach. The liquid ($$$) does not upset his stomach. I found the best price from Fosters and Smith online.

Samson is Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and is the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey came to live with him after Daisy went to the bridge in Oct 2011 and then Lady left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Samson is once again a bachelor. I love your brownie comment!!

Quad pug Tani has been on Rimadyl for almost a year now.  She also has pretty bad arthritis in all 4 legs and her back.  We have not had any problems with the meds so far.  She also gets a glucosamine supplement, fish oil, and takes K9 Immunity plus.  I saw a huge improvement in her mobility when she started on the Rimadyl.

I have heard terrible stories about Rimadyl

Comet did Rimadyl for 1 1/2 years daily. She was always 3 legged and she had both of her back knees go out and had TPLO surgery in them.  So, her body really needed something when she was around 11.  I, too worried but her ortho vet reminded me, it's better to have them feel good than to worry about something that may never happen.  And even if it takes time off of their life, it's better to have them feeling good.

She actually died of cancer (hemangiosarcoma) in the end which was diagnosed the night she died.  (she was bleeding out)  In looking back, I'm so thankful for her being on Rimadyl because she actually did have cancer in her body – at least for 2 months.

If I do-overs, I would have rather been on metacam, like Samson.  Although, I guess it doesn't matter since she had no side effects.

But just so you know, aspirin can cause problems short term.  My friends put their dog on asprin because their dog blew a ACL ligament in the knee.  So, they only did aspirin (not knowing it was bad) for a couple of months. They did the surgery and but the vet didnt know that her stomach was completely ulcerated.  She never recovered.  The autopsy revealed what happened.

Maybe you can get a switch to Metacam from your vet.  If he tolerates it, then you can get your vet to write a RX and you can fill it at Walmart for cheap.

I would not use the aspirin due to increased risk of stomach ulcer.  Also it is not that effective.  Your dog is big enough that your vet could script out the meloxicam tablets for $4 per month and you can try that instead of Rimadyl.
