Should we amputate now or later?
You're in a hard place and we can't blame you for being on the fence about amputation. I don't have experience with chondrosarcoma but I do know is that there is a chance it can spread.
And when it comes to pain, any pain, whether it be from a bone tumor or accident, I know that dogs are so stoic, they hide their pain much better than humans think we do. We hide it so well that even dogs with ostesarcoma can hide the pain of slowly exploding bone from their humans until the bone shatters. It's only recently that the veterinary profession has given pain management in dogs the attention it deserves, and humans still don't know all there is to know about how dogs experience pain.
Perhaps you might want to look at it as, what would you do if you were the one diagnosed with it? What treatments would you pursue? Would you live with a bone tumor if it kept your leg? How much discomfort are you willing to tolerate?
