Hi tripawd snow bunnies

I don't have much advice related to snow and ice, although we definitely tried to prepare for that last year. Thankfully our autumn lasted long, into the first week of December, and we only had a skiff of snow once. Unfortunately, Tazzie only lasted 4 months past amp, and passed the day before our first real snow.

In any case, I did acquire some of the ruff wear extra grip boots (have no idea how they work since we did not get the weather needed to use them). I planned to avoid sidewalks and any slick places and try to stick to parks that have rougher ground under the snow. Of course, you can still get ice.

The harness with handle is definitely a good thing to have on the ice. You can use that when you know you are on a slick place and just let them romp when in a relatively safe area.

One of the main things we did was obtain warm coats (a fleece sweater and an overcoat), because Tazzie's coat was so sparse from the chemo.

Genie from Edmonton had great tips for snow, but she isn't around this site much anymore. I remember seeing pictures of her in a fleece sweater with her ruffwear harness over that, which is also what we did on a few outings when a layer was needed. I bet Catie is out playing in the snow a lot these days and has some ideas.

Hello,

From snowy Northern Maine!!  For my tripawd up here in the snow, she'll plow right thru it(just watched her at lunchtime doing that!) provided the snow is soft and fluffy.  But heavier stuff is tough on her, even with her being tall.  Up here, we are used to getting snow and my husband plows a certain amount of the yard and we also make snowsled trails for the dogs in the yard :-)

Good luck – I'm assuming your snow won't stick around long being in NJ?

Wow! I cant get more professional advice about snow than jerry, chicago, winnipeg, and northern maine. It would seem that my worries about Georgie in the snow were a little unfounded, because we recieved a crash course last night. Guess who had diarrhea?. . . . No, not me. Yep, Georgia girl must've had a treat from her stocking from Santa that didnt agree with her and every hour and a half from 1 am till about two hours ago, little girl was asking to go out for a walk. It didnt matter that Huckleberry and I had packed a manageable path for her, the 50 to 70 mph winds were covering them right back up! But she didnt care, like the bitchy divawink she is she wanted to go where she wanted to go. Even though the tornadic snow clouds were taking my breath away, she stood strong and unphased, donning the beautiful and regal winter coat that mommy had stitched out of a christmas tree skirt, and let go! Then, despite my stern guidance, she trucked through her own trails back into the house stopping for ice cold snacks. When we got back inside, her snow white butt, uhhh, needed cleaning, and we waited for the next one.

But she's done an awesome job. The snow is light and fluffy, but there are unchartered drifts that keep changing, and I cant let her pounce into them like she wants. When we get a winter storm around here, they're usually nor'easters like this one and they can be pretty nasty, hurricanes with snow. Although it is going up to 50 degrees by the end of the week and most of it will be gone, last year we had four consecutive, and it piled up and stayed piled up (that pic of her is from last year), and they both had a hard time on the trails once they got more packed and icy. So I was trying to prepare myself for yesterday with my new three-legger and I appreciate the varsity support from you guys! I do have a ruff-wear harness, but I dont know when its safe to start using yet, four days from her one month ampuversary. I was worried about her diarrhea at first, but a few hours ago her brother had the same thing which makes me suspect that it was treats. But since I started writing this, Georgia just got up and vomited, so now Im worried about something else like maybe doggie flu; she was at our local vet last week and maybe theres potential to contract something there. Man, it just keeps coming…

Oh boy, I hear ya' on "man, it just keeps coming" comment!!!  I hope everything passes for both your pups soon!!!  Maybe they did catch a bug??

See….white snow, no problem for her! smile  (I worry far more about ICE).

We're supposed to have a warm Friday here as well. It's almost worse to have the few warm days thrown in. Unless it's warm, long enough to melt everything, be really careful when things start to thaw & freeze. The layers of ice (especially if it snows again) can be deceiving. It can be especially bad where melting snow drips from roofs & gutters. I'm usually pretty much in favor of letting Isabelle find her own way, but am extra diligent with the ice. She will do almost anything to evade me when it's snowing. She plowed out of the car the other morning into a drift because she couldn't wait one second & then couldn't get out.

Hope everyone is feeling better soon.

Oh Georgia, we hope your belly is feeling better. Tell your peeps to try feeding you some canned pumpkin, or steamed sweet potato, or just plain rice and boiled chicken for dinner, that should help.

Well, glad you found your way in the snow! I just feel bad that you and your peeps had to go outside so much in that icky weather! Stay warm and feel better.

Happy 1 month Ampuversary Georgia!  May you have many, many more!

I know you saw my original post but for the sake of cross-posting and helping others find info on the study and Palladia I wanted to say here that we were also offered the OSU "Palladia/Piroxicam/Cyclophosphamide Therapy in Dogs with Osteosarcoma" clinical trial.  I was extremely excited after the vet initially told us about it but then suffered a kick in the gut feeling when they brought out the cost breakdown and fine print.  I posted about my concerns in my Hunter update – 1 week post amp post.  Basically I am concerned about the additional tests and meds (for her comfort and our pocketbook) and the restrictions on other meds/supplements she is allowed to take during the protocol.  If we participate, I too hope that we would be randomly assigned into the Palladia portion of the study.  That would be so wonderful.

Here's a link to the study if anyone is interested:

Best of luck Georgia!  I look forward to swapping stories with you.

Thanks! We link to all the clinical trials currently recruiting candidates at OSU – and numerous other institutions – on the Tripawds News blog Resources page.
