Hello, I'm register now!!!. My name is Laura. I'm from Colombia and is a little difficult for me to write in english, but I hope you can understand me.

Tomorrow (June 14th), my dog "Junior" has amputation surgery (foreleg). I don't know what happened to him because found him and he already had his injured leg: His nerves were damaged and he didn't feel his leg

I´m scared because I have many doubts of the care that I must give.

Thanks. big-grin

Hi Laura from Columbia, welcome! Thank you for registering and joining us here. Your English is much better than my Spanish! I will use Google translate below to try to make it easier (I hope!).

Junior is very lucky to find you! Is he a big dog or a small dog? Older or younger?

If a dog is in good shape, he usually does fine and recovers in about two weeks. It sounds like Junior is already used to being on three legs so that is good.

Please ask your vet for good pain medication so he can recover well. At minimum, dogs should come home with a drug called "Tramadol." And also another drug to reduce inflammation is highly advised. Meloxicam is a common drug vets use in different countries.

What are your floors in your house like? If they are slippery, we suggest placing no-slip rugs around the house to make it easier for him to walk around.

You also want to keep him confined to a small space in your home until his stitches are out. Too much activity is not recommended while he is healing.

Does he have stairs to go in and outside of your house? If so you may want to assist him. A temporary dog sling like this and later a harness like the Ruffwear Webmaster harness is very helpful.

I suggest reviewing Jerry's Required Reading List for more tips. Others will chime in too and I have asked our Spanish-speaking members to help out as well. Good luck tomorrow and keep us updated OK?

-------------------------------------------

Buena suerte mañana y mantenernos actualizados ¿OK?

Hello all, thanks for your help.

I´m from Medellín "La ciudad de la eterna primavera".

Junior is like a "Labrador" and is young. I think He is 6 months old. The floors in my house are slippery; thanks to its recommendations, I will look for an anti-slip mat to facilitate the Junior's movement.

In this moment I have problems to find a harness like the Ruffwear Webmaster , because in Colombia i didn't find one similar.

I will read the links that they left me and I will keep you informed.

Thanks for all.

Hello all and thanks for all your help.

Thanks Christine for your good wishes

Junior left the surgery a few hours ago. I haven't seen him yet; the vet told me that he did very well in surgery. He has been very anxious and because of that he has been hurt twice. For this reason, the vet tells me that it is best to go for him before. I'm afraid to take Junior so early to the house; I don't know if I'd better stay a little longer at the vet. What do you think?

Welcome Laura.  I am sorry to hear about Junior.   Sassy came home the same night.  She slept all night but I didn't sleep much.   Try to keep him as quiet as possible and on top of pain meds.

Good luck and keep us posted

hugs

Laura,

I'm so glad he's home. I can see Christine gave you good advice. Did he come home with any pain medication? It sounds like he will need some in order to feel more comfortable.

When he is ready for a harness please let us know and we might be able to locate one for you. You will need to measure his body. Here is how to measure for a harness.

The next couple of nights may be sleepless. If you can get him on good pain medication that will help. Please let us know how he is doing (and you too!). We are thinking of you.
