I hoping someone can advise. My 8 year old dog, Abi had an amputation for osteocarcoma about 3 weeks ago. Until last Thursday she was doing fine- started to eat normally, interested in short walks, etc. Then Thursday she stood up a let out a blood curdling yell and started running from room to room. Later when she tried to stand up she would yelp. I took her to the vets Friday morning. She had her stitches out and the vet checked for a reason for the pain. There seemed to be none, except perhaps a slight infection. He has given her stronger antiobiotics. I wondered if it was phantom limb and asked for Gabapentin. She is now of two lots of antibiotics, gabopentin and metacam. Her appetite is down and she is back to being fed by hand and occasionally will yell when standing up. Has anyone had anything similar?

Abi.....Co gratulatio s on your recovery....except for what does sou d like phantom pain . Go through all the links above and see if it fits her sysmptons..

The antibiodics could certainly be affecting her appetite

Meta am DID cause tummy upset for my dog but I know for others it doesn't. Maybe you could sake your vet if you could take her off that for a day or two and see if that helps.

I know it's hard to not worry when your Air isn't feeling well, but at least it sou D's like it's nothing major and that's the good.news!:-) :-) You are a great advocate for your girl and clearly doing a diligent job watching over her:-) :-)

Please keep us posted and would love to see pictures:-) :-)

Take care and five her some hugs....and give yourself one too....a great big one:-)

I don't have anything to add but I just wanted to say welcome to you and Abi :)

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Hello, I hoped others would think it was phantom limb, that's why I asked the vet for gabapentin. Wasn't sure though as she only yelps when she tries to stand. I had another dog who had osteocarcoma (another beautiful greyhound who lived 8 months post op with chemo) and while he seemed to do something similar it wasn't related to his standing, so in a way it seemed to be more like the other posts, ie more likely to phatom limb. As I was typing she just yelped again and seems fine when she sits down again.

PS Jerry I am so grateful for your site. It helps a great deal to see what others are going through and to get advice. When things seem so terrible and I feel so helpless about not being able to help Abi at least I can see what others do. You deserve a medal for our site. I used it when Mitch (the previous dog with osteocarcoma) was ill too.

and thank you for your welcomes benni, rica and jerry.

The not eating bit I assumed was sedation due to the gebapentin. She has had metacam before with no side effects. Or it may be she anticipates pain when standing so waits for me to hand feed her.

Just one ore quick thought....and you've probably already do e this....but maybe you could try massaging her really week right before she gets up next time......her "stump"..her spine....just kind of a loosening up massage. Now she's probably associated getting g up with pain so she probably tightens up a little...just a guess!

Or...it could just be like you said....she loves being g ha d fed and treated like the Queen she is:-) :-) :-)

And you deserve a medaltoo...two greyhounds with osteo?? Bummer.

Hopefully everything you are doing will show results shortly and she can co tinue on with that great recovery and get ALL her sparkle back without I terruptio:-) :-) :-)

Hail to the Queen of being ha d fed:-) :-) Sally and Happy Hannah

Benny- I will try to massage her before she tries to stand but the trick is anticipating when she is going to try.

I am hoping the fact that now she yelps rather than the blood curdling scream means the garbapentin is starting to work.

Jerry's pack. Mitch had a blog on this site until c. March 2010 when he had his last chemo. His op must have been December 2009. I was using a different email. Then, as now, the site was very useful for my early morning trawling the internet for some way to help a sick dog and some way for me to feel better.

Hi Abi and family.  About 1.5 weeks after Zeus' amp, we noticed that he was reluctant to move around or get up/down.  He would also whimper a bit when we picked him up to carry him upstairs to bed at night.  Our vet was an orthopedic specialist (small town and we didn't have an oncologist near us) and upon physical exam he found that Zeus was painful in his back and diagnosed a back sprain.  He said it was likely from the new way of walking and using muscles that he had not used before.  Dr. R increased the pain meds a little and kept him on the meds for an extra two weeks past the initial two-week recovery period.  About two weeks (one month after the amp), Zeus was much better and never had any further problems.  It could be phantom pains, or maybe Abi has just tweaked something that needs a little time to heal.

Times like these are the ones that impress how unfortunate it is that our pups can't talk.  Good luck with the rest of recovery!

Lisa

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Thank you Zeus's family for sharing something similar about your pet. It gives me hope for Abi. She is much the same today. Still yelping when standing up but seems perfectly settled when lying down. She got up to go outside for a pee and after the pee sat down in the garden, shivering. I had to call her in, but once in and back on her bed she was ok. Am mixing lots of water in her feed as she wont get up to drink. She is eating ok, though only by hand.
