hi, I couldn’t find a lot of threads regarding this trial (which seems odd as it is the biggest thing in canine osteosarcoma), but it could be because I’m not that familiar with how this site organizes itself.  In any case, I’m just looking for basic info on others’ experiences so far in the Aratana canine osteosarcoma vaccine trial, of course without breaking the non-disclosure requirements...

Tomorrow my 8.5 yr. old neutered male greyhound, Buck, is scheduled for final screening at Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern PA.  If he gets the go ahead, he’ll get the first treatment early Friday  morning.  They will keep him overnight in the hospital to monitor & respond to any side effects w/in the first 24 hrs.  I understand that most of the reactions happen w/in a short time of treatment, BUT can anyone advise if some side effects come on later? Do I need to be WORRIED about NEW issues arising after release from the hospital? I assume that there is also a self-reporting aspect of the study (particularly 4 those w/out a hospital stay) & that’s why there are such restrictions on sharing side effect history, so I’m not asking specifics, just how long before NEW side effects stop and its just handling the ones already occuring.

It seems that not all sites are keeping the dogs overnight (based on prices I’ve seen quoted - Hope is charging $1500 plus, if there are significant side effects while in the hospital) and I am hoping that anything really bad will happen during that time .... We live too far from the hospital to get back in an emergency and its got me worried.

in any case, 2morrow is a big day — if he gets in, a new set of concerns; if he doesn’t, that means its in his lungs and I am crushed...

No worries. When searching try to use the "Advanced Search" fields if you don't find anything. Here are 26 separate Forum Search Results for "Canine Osteosarcoma Vaccine". You will also find Tripawds News Blog posts about the Canine Osteosarcoma Vaccine.

I’m just looking for basic info on others’ experiences so far

I know you're worried, but the vets will address your concerns when you go in. The questions you're asking are pretty specific, and in my opinion, could put participants at risk of breaking the agreement if they answered.

So first, try not to worry. What I know from interviewing Dr. Vaughan is that dogs are thoroughly checked out before being released to their humans after being given the vaccine. You will see in our News Blog post about Bowie, that she lives in Los Angeles and her clinic is in Las Vegas, a 3 hour drive. The vets at the clinic would not let her go home without being 110% sure that any side effects that did/could/or might happen were addressed before releasing her. And oh, Dr. Vaughan also mentions in the video that any side effects that have been experienced during the first study were much milder than anything that can happen with regular old chemotherapy treatments.

I hope this helps. Again, don't worry.

We will keep our paws, fingers, toes and tails crossed that Buck has a green light for tomorrow! Keep us posted.
