So to hear Cora's still in pain. I would think the Gabapentin is certainly worth a try. If it is nerve pain, then this is really what is needed.

This is the thread about Charlie that Sally refers to above.

Do hope things look up soon. This situation is really tough on all of you.

Big hug,

You are doing an EXCELLENT job of caring for Cora!!!

And yes, the only way to determine if the Tramadol is making her whackynis to do what you did and thst was to take her off ut ir taper it.

I've forvotten...Is she on Gabapentin?

And so eone will jave to help me with the search, but we have a member named CHARLIE who had hORRIBLE yelping cries out of the blue for weeks!! We saw the video. it sounds a lot like what Cora is dealing with.

If I recall, it was an exposed nerve situation (I think)...and kt rewuired surgery to fix it.

So, if someone can SEARCH and fi d that, I think you may...or may not....find some similarities there.

Hang in there! This WILL be figured out!!!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

And still take the walks slowly with lots of rest stops.

She is not yet on Gabapentin. If her yelps continue tonight, I am going to call and ask my vet if she can be prescribed that. I want to rule out the Tramadol as the cause of her yelps before medicating her again. It should be completely out of her system after today.

If that video can be found that would be fantastic!! It sounds similar to what she's been doing.

Thanks! 🙂

We would never think badly of you for taking her off the Tramadol. We did the same for our Wyatt Ray when we discovered he's a lunatic on it. Do try the Gabapentin and see what happens.

Is your vet offering any other alternative plans, such as rehab therapy? If not, I would consider finding one who specializes in pain management . I searched for pain management specialists near you, but they're both two hours away from Starkville (one in Jackson and one in Oxford). If this continues you may want to make the drive, it would be worth it to get a proper diagnosis.

Try not to be too hard on your vet (although I totally get your frustration). Most times amputation recovery happens without any major issues afterward. Unless vets have lots of experience treating those issues, resolving them is difficult. Some vets have more experience, some not so much. Either way, the good thing is you are learning how to advocate for her and that's what counts. Keep up the great work.

Thank you so much! And thanks for the advice on Gabapentin and see if that helps. Hopefully my vet won't get too annoyed with me pushing him for different recovery methods ;P.

Thank you so much! I'm going to ask about Gabapentin. If he doesn't agree, I guess I'll just have to try to find another vet who will prescribe it. I'm hoping he'll be on board since he's been her vet since we adopted her! He's generally open to my suggestions, so we shall see! 🙂

If Gabapentin fails, I definitely will check out the pain management specialists and see if they can help her.

Thanks so much for your advice and words of wisdom! 🙂 sleepy

*PUPDATE*

Cora is doing WONDERFUL and is back to her old, goofy self! I could not be more thrilled. After a few days, the Tramadol wore off. I was waiting to see if she was still showing signs of pain after it was completely out of her system, and she is doing great!

She's sleeping through the night, she is moving around more, and can go on her regular walks again. The only time she lets out any yelps is when my husband or I first get home (and I think it's out of excitement more than anything).

For now, I feel like I can breathe and know that she is healing great, and there isn't much that needs to be done as far as continuing treatment. Of course, if this ever changes, I will be sure to talk to my vet about Gabapentin.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words and advice. I know where to come if I ever have any questions.

Sincerely,

Riley (and Cora)sleepy

Seeing Cora start to be her old self is the best news ever! And it's still so early on and it only gets better! 🙂

This post has me grinning ear to ear! SPECTACULAR NEWS!

Oliver also had a similar experience with continuing pain post -op.  His Mom posted under "3-pointer Oliver."

Are her staples out yet?  Those can also cause bizarre pain at times.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.
