Guinness made it through his rear leg amputation and is still in the hospital one day out. He has eaten twice for me when I visit and drank a lot of water too.  He has yet to pee on his own and they insert a catheter to empty his bladder. Is it normal for him to take awhile to pee on his own?

He stood on his own several times to drink water.  Even with a sling he tires easily, which I'm guessing will improve once the drugs lessen and he gains his strength.

Does this all sound pretty normal at this very early stage?

VERY NORMAL!!!     A YPD YAAAAAAAAAY FOR SURGERY BEING DONE!!! 🙂

Okay, maybe it's not completely "normal".....many dogs can't stand yet and don't eat anything the first day or two after surgery!!  So Guinness is ahead of the curve!

He  is VERY drugged and this is MAJOR SURGERY!!!  The meds and surgery can mess with him a bit so having to use a cathetw is not unheard of at all.   And don't be surprised is he doesn't poopicon_png poop for several days.  That's "normal" too!

You'll see a difference in a couple of days.  Now, dontw expect that he'll be running a marathon just yet, but he'll be a little more stable and less woozy in a couple of days.  Just let him rest, rest, rest for now.  Potty breaks and more rest.

TRY and get some good sleep tonight.  Guinness is in good hands and on good pain meds!

Update us when you can

Lots of hugs to you!

Yay for Guinness! Wow, he's doing great... eating and drinking within 24 hours! Excellent job! It amazing what the drugs can do for them! Just as Sally says, rest, rest & more rest! Lots of patience and lots of tasty things to eat. It sounds like Guinness wants to break a few records for himself! clap Keep up the good work Pal!

Yay surgery is over and Guiness is starting the road to recovery.  Everything sounds normal and I'm sure soon he'll be home and back under your watchful eye and loving care.  Keep us posted on the homecoming!

Thanks!  Biggest concern is not peeing on his own so he can't come home yet.  He is being catheterized. Is this normal?  He's eating for me so that's good.  I'm just worried about him not going on his own. They've lessened his pain meds and he is perkier today so maybe that will help him catch on?

Those hospital meds are pretty strong, so a reduction may indeed remind him of how to pee! P!!   There's a technique that can be done at home for expressing the bladder  when dogs don't pee right away after surgery.    Ask the Vet to show you that so he can go home even if he hasn't peed on his own.

Come on. Guinness!!! PEEEE!!! Have the Vet turn the faucet on and see if that sound helps!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂     We're all doing the HAPPY PEE DANCE for you Guinness to help move things along!!! PEEEEEE!!!!! 🙂 🙂

And YAY FOR EATING!! 🙂

Hugs

Stewie did not like 'being helped' to go pee and certainly poo'ing was another lesson to be learnt, but we had to switch right away to a regular collar for him for the first few days, staying very close in case he needed our help. I think a few dogs have issues with their humans helping them, it's not the norm for them. Just like Sally had mentioned, the drugs really do mess with them for a while. Patience will be your closest friend over the next couple of weeks..... this week we are praying for Guinness to break the peeing record!exclamationrasberry

Totally normal and we've seen it here before, so try not to worry! Remember that dogs are like people. We all go through things like this on our own timelines. No two bodies are exactly alike. Guinness is his own dog and in no time at all he will be back to his usual self. It's hard not to worry, I know!

Happy to announce that he has peed!  Never been so happy to hear about urine!  He is still eating well.  His red blood count has been low so they are still monitoring it and won't send him home yet. May need a blood transfusion if it doesn't stabilize. Anyone had to deal with this issue?  Thanks all!

Yay Pee!!!  It's the little things, really.  Fred is two days post-op and hasn't pooped yet but boy is he loving his pork chops!  I'm here with you!  Go Guinness!  (really, just GO!)  Fingers and Toes crossed that his blood count stabilizes.  Sending hugs.

He is home!  His blood count is slowly rising so I will just keep an eye on his gums and energy. Right now he is sleeping. I think being home is putting him at ease. He has a Help Em Up harness on which he wore at the vet, but I'm just getting used to how to help him around. He definitely needs assistance. Hasn't peed at home yet, but was doing so at the vet so waiting for that first one at home and how it looks!

He is on an antibiotic and three pain meds. His incision looks good and not too much swelling or bruising.

It will be a long road to recovery but we will take a day at a time. Any advice on managing his moving around would be helpful. I know he needs lots of rest so I'm keeping it to a minimum.
