I am just starting Nova on metronomic chemotherapy and her oncologist suggested a product called CAS Options, which I had never heard of before. Doing some research on it, it seems to me to be in many ways like K-9 Immunity , but not as expensive. The oncologist sells it for about $68 per month, but my regular vet can sell it to me for $54. Mind you, Nova is a 118# Great Dane, so a bottle would go much further with a smaller dog.  She suggested I give it twice a day, 3 tablets, with each meal.

Like K9 Immunity , key ingredients are reishi, shiitake, and maitake mushrooms. I am told that mushrooms have potent health-giving, anti-carcinogenic properties.  Ingredients of this supplement are:

Vitamin A - 1050 IU

Vitamin E (d-Alpha tocopherol) - 53 IU

Selenium - 26 mg

Reishi mushroom - 578 mg

Shiitake mushroom - 446 mg

Green tea powder - 105 mg

Vitamin C - 105 mg

Maitake mushroom - 95 mg

N-acetylcysteine - 79 mg

Coenzyme Q-10 - 1 mg

The also have a different formulation for cats.

http://www.gene.....spets.com/ (manufacturer's site)

http://www.drba.....bs.htm#cas this site says:

Scientists from the American Institute for Cancer Research recently stated that mounting scientific evidence strongly suggests a wider role for natural supplements for patients diagnosed with cancer or currently under treatment. CAC Options provides a concentrated synergistic blend of Reishi, Maitake, and Shiitake mushromms, combined with the strong antioxidants found in Coenzyme Q-10, Green Tea, and Selenium to help the immune system, reduce inflammation, and had anit-tumor effects. Recommended for dogs or cats with sarcomas, mast-cell tumors, melanomas, lymphoma, and other forms of cancer. Also recommended for pets being treated with chemo or radiation therapy.

Some CAS Options product reviews here.

(Sorry about all the cut and paste, I'm sure it will probably come through a mess in my post).

SO…. Nova's regimen will be as follows:

MORNING:

1 can of EVO canned food mixed with EVO grain-free kibble

1 capsule of Omega 3 Fish Oil concentrate (bought it at Costco) daily

1 Cytoxan (Cyclophosphamide) tablet - 25 mg EVERY OTHER DAY (this is the oral chemo pill)

1 Piroxicam (Feldene) capsule - 10 mg daily (this is an NSAID)

1 Pepcid (the human kind, supposed to help with stomach irritation from Piroxicam)

3 CAS Options tablets

EVENING:

EVO grain-free kibble

3 CAS options tablets

We are starting all this tomorrow, still waiting for the CAS options to come in at the vet, so no results to report as of yet. I will post any issues if they come up, and will let you all know how it goes.

Sue,

Is the amount of CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q) 1 mg per tablet?  I have looked into this antioxidant for Tazzie since it is also good for the heart and it is recommended for her to get 60 to 100 mg per day.  I can buy this as a separate supplement but I am just curious.

Thanks for the post!

FYI: Only Natural Pet has Genesis Resources Canine CAS Options for Dogs. It is also available for a bit less at EntirelyPets.

Hi Dane Mom,

I came across your posts as I was once again searching for information on canine lymphoma treatment. My heart goes out to you and your doggie, Nova. My six year old Golden Retriever, Schroeder, has been battling lymphoma for six months. If you haven't read the book The Natural Vet's Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs by Dr. Shawn Messonier Dr. Shawn Messonier, I would highly recommend it.

I am also using CAS and a variety of other supplements. One difference I noticed in in the amount of Omega 3 fish oil you are using. Based on information from my holistic vet and this book, Schroeder is taking about 5 Tablespoons of Omega 3 fish oil daily. This is the recommended dose for his weight of 80 pounds. Of course , I had to gradually increase his dose up to this amount. I found a fish oil in a bottle from Only Natural Pet online, so it is much easier to use large amounts. The book discusses numerous alternative/integrative topics including Omega 3 supplementation.

My oncologist also recommended l-glutamine (2000mg a day) for digestive issues, and I have been using a product called Gastriplex from Thorne for his sensitive tummy as well.  My holistic vet also recommended Turmeric.

I wish you all the best!

Hi Sue,

Thanks for sharing this information.  I may look into it, as the price does make it much more affordable.

Good luck to you and your puppy!

Sue and Nova,

Thanks for the information.  I am a little behind on reading the postings and this one will be a great help.  I have book-marked Jerry's link  and order ASAP.  As you know, I will do almost anything for Cherry's quality of life and this appears to hold good promise, easy to administer, and dirt cheap.

Best to all our Tripawd Friends.

Bob & Cherry
