I have had a really confusing time with the treatment of my dog Cassie. She is a 14 year old lab/coonhound cross. She had sores on her front left paw that the vet kept saying very nothing, just harmless growths/ They grew and another one popped up on her shoulder area. I took her out of country to Canada to where I live ( she was living in Nevada at our farm). In Canada they said she needed and operation to remove the lumps and sent me to a specialist. The specialist said he could try to remove the shoulder lump but the one on the paw had no skin to cover it. He did not explain any thing beyond telling me since she is old he would not recommend amputation. She had the should lump removed but when she was released without a cone or any covering, her paw started bleeding and got infected.I sent pictures of the infection to the vet but they did nothing. I took her back for 2 weeks every 2nd day and they re bandaged her paw but she was still limping.During this time I asked for results of blood tests or an explanation of why, but it was not forthcoming. I took her to another vet who could not understand why the leg was not amputated instead of the costly useless surgery and she had her amputation and was doing well. She then had an infection at the incision site so I took her to an emergency vet clinic( the oozing started at night). They gave her antibiotics and pain killers and and did chest x rays and tested the inflammation to see that she had the right antibiotics. She is doing OK now, but I have been reading information on this blog and I am wondering why she would not be given chemo and if there is anything else I should do. She is eating but she now prefers BBQ chicken. She walks and wags her tail a lot. She was not  doing this after the surgery to remove the should lump as she was still in a lot of pain. Thanks for any information or help.

Hello Harper's Mom, welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

You've definitely had a runaround with Harper's situation, I'm really sorry that the three vets she saw about this did not give her the treatment she needed for a full recovery. How frustrating, disappointing and expensive! I can only assume that none of the vets provided you with more information about cancer treatment because they don't see a lot of cases and are not familiar with the latest options in veterinary chemotherapy. At the very least they should have provided you with a referral to an oncologist.

It's your right to know what all your treatment options are to treat the cancer, even if she is a senior dog. Where exactly are you? We can try to help you find an oncologist near you. Even if you decide not to pursue treatment (and that's OK too, chemo isn't always right for every situation) it will give you peace of mind to base your decision on information you were given.

Overall though it sounds like Harper has bounced back beautifully considering all that's she's been through. What an amazing, resilient doggie! Do you have any photos you'd like to share? We would love to see them!

Best of luck Cassie . . . you've been through a lot already.

FWIW, I prefer BBQ chicken too.

Hi sweetie 🌺

How frustrating to go from one vet to the next without any proper explanations ...

I agree with Jerry you should see an oncologist and he can help you find one in your area which is great news.

Once you see the oncologist, you can then decide to have chemo or not.

Some of us did and some did not, it is a very personal decision as in either case there are no guarantees.

The important thing is your baby is happy again 💗

Let us know how things progress, big hug and cuddles to your sweetie pie 😘😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
