It's a good thing we don't have any fine china, then!

Definitely some nausea today. Ondansetron seems to be working. Bright attitude. Trying to remind myself that a little nausea is normal - he did just get a large injection of toxic chemicals! Drinking water very nicely and seems very happy, so those are the important things. 🙂

Yep, some nausea is definitely "normal", especially anywhere between day three and five. You're right, he's feeling good and that's the important thing!!

Keep on keeping o. Mosby!! You are such a ROCK STAR! 🙂

Alright, folks. Help me think positive. Ate breakfast. Lots of nausea during the day. But ate mid day snack. More nausea. Definitely loose stool. Initially turning down treats when offered, but will eat them if you leave them with him. Initially turns down peanut butter when I give it to him as a treat with his pills. Did not eat dinner when offered. Turned away. He got his next set of meds a little early, and we're going to give them some time to work and see if he'll eat then. He's not totally depressed, but not bright, and not feeling great. But this isn't unusual, right? We are day 3 post-chemo. I just need reassurance that this isn't an indication that we are going down the awful path we went down last time. 🙁 We're working to keep him hydrated and happy. We have his PT workup in the morning, 9:00. I'm almost afraid he won't be well enough for it, but I'm still going to bring him in. His leg weakness and back issues absolutely have to be checked out. So, positive thoughts for Mosby, I'm hoping he'll eat dinner a little later on tonight, and be feeling great tomorrow.

There is a wide range of what is normal post chemo, and what you describe is not outside the range.  Plus, with everything he went through with the Cipro, I am not surprised he is having tummy trouble.  Although Otis never refused food, he had squishy poo and nausea after chemos.  I started boiled chicken and white rice day of, and for 3 to 4 days after, chemos 2 through 4.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Okay, here's my two cents. Had Mosby not had so many issues before, I think we would all agree this probably just a "normal" reaction to chemo. It is not unusual for a dog to the off his food, even have a loose stool, and definitely just not feel so great. So yes, this is most likely nothing to be concerned about for a day or two.

His previous experience does want to make you stay on top of things though. I wouldn't hesitate one second to take him in for at least some Sub-Q fluids if the loose stool etc continues for more than a day or so. You don't want to let any of this get a head start on him. And I only say that because he seems susceptible to taking a downhill turn if any of this gets an upper hand. Again, I think you are most likely just dealing with a normal side effect that many dogs experience.

Although I know you are anxious to get him going on the physical therapy, it may be best just to have a consult as opposed to Too Much actual therapy itself at this point. That way you can at least have some information on how to proceed when all of this gets behind you.

Don't make a big deal out of him being off food right now. Do just like you were doing, offer it, leave it and walk away.

It certainly seems likely that the Cipro was definitely the cause of most of his issues. He could have had some chemo side effects mixed in there also, but the side effects with the Cipro made it far worse than it should have been. Or even vice versa. Just keep an eye on him and try not to panic!
Yeah, right?

Let's see how tonight goes and how he is in the morning. We, of course, will very much look forward to your update, and a really good one! We are certainly keeping all our paws crossed that all this subsides by tomorrow, or certainly does not get any worse, but rather appears to be improving!

Lots of love and hugs

Yes, I'm going to see how tonight goes (I hope we can all sleep through the night ... his tummy is upset) and hope for a much, much, much better day tomorrow. He did not want dinner, even after his meds should have kicked in. His attitude is ... what you'd expect for a dog feeling sick. I 100% agree he's not up for PT tomorrow, but I'm keeping the appointment mainly because she's a vet and it will be good to see a vet and have him evaluated. And even though it's not tummy related, he needs to have his pain issues evaluated.

Poor Mosby. Tomorrow is a new day. Tomorrow he will wake up, eat breakfast, and have a good day. I am sure of it.

I hope all of you got a good night's sleep... and that breakfast was to everyones liking!!

Since I am afraid we are the ones that started this whole spoon-feeding issue I thought I'd chime in to 'fess up once again:

Manni has, of course..., his own china. Well, sort of.

But don't tell anyone 🙂

I don't have a picture of him eating left-over scrabs off this but I will try and take some.

Mosby, I hope this brightens your day a little and makes you forget your upset tummy for a while!

Hugs

That is too cute!  Where in the world did you find it?  In the fine china theme, just imagine serving holiday dinner on it. . .

Hope today is a better day for Mosby!

That's hilarious! I think it would scare Mosby!

I would say that today was better. He ate breakfast on the "second" try after turning down the first offer. He had a nice visit with the PT vet. She did not find anything obviously wrong/painful with his remaining hind limb. Felt he was ambulating well. Her one concern with respect to his back is that we need to rule out metastasis to the spine. She said that the area of concern should be visible on his lung xrays, and if not we will get another set done. She was getting them from the other vet, and I didn't hear anything back today, so I will call tomorrow morning. We discussed his meds, and have re-worked them. Working on the assumption that it's muscle spasms, we're adding methocarbamol (muscle relaxer) and raising his gabapentin dose (which was actually almost sub-therapeutic anyway). We're also going to tail off the tramadol and stop it. She is the second vet to tell me that many vets do not believe tramadol has a pain relieving effect in dogs, because dogs do not have the pain receptor that humans have that tramadol is designed for. But it does definitely have a sedative effect. So it is often prescribed if only for that reason, and while that is helpful in dogs that need a sedative, it's not therapeutic for Mosby's back.

The rest of the day went ok. We hung out at home. His GI symptoms have improved a lot. We re-stocked his favorite food and he ate a full can for dinner. He's been bright and interested in things. He's been drinking well. So, while I still get super spooked by pretty much any odd behavior he has and am still afraid of jinxing things, overall he is doing ok especially when you compare it to the same Monday 3 weeks ago. That's night and day.

It's kind of sad, I was sitting in my chair this evening, and Mosby came over to see me and then laid down at my feet. I looked over at my husband nervously and said "Is this normal? I don't remember. Is he coming over because he wants to be near me or because something is wrong?" I have forgotten normal. It turned out he just wanted to be petted. Which is great! But, man, to be in a position where you automatically think worst case scenario -- I know you all understand that too well.

On to the next day!

Been waiting for a Mosby update all day...and it's well worth the wait!!!

Sounds like Mosby just had the sometimes expected day or two of side effects from chemo. Actually, just one and a half days! YAY FOR MOSBY!

Yeah, it is pretty sad when a dog comes over just to be petted and his human thinks something wrong!! We get it! Is this ais crazy journey or what???

Glad the PT consult went well. Let us know how the re-working of the meds works out. Sounds like a good plan!

Now, as far as that fine china dinner plate of Manni's, YIKES!!! That's enough to scare any dog away from eating! 🙂
